Vehicle: 2020 Ram 2500 Laramie

Hi everyone, I'm pulling my hair out with the Uconnect system in my 2020 Ram 2500 Laramie. For the past few weeks, the screen has been freezing randomly, becoming unresponsive, and then sometimes it just restarts itself. It's usually fine for a bit after a restart, but then the issue comes back.

This is the 12-inch screen, and it's super frustrating when I'm trying to use navigation or adjust climate controls. I've tried doing a soft reset by holding down the volume and tuner buttons, but that's only a temporary fix. Is this a known problem for the 2020 models? Are there any software updates or TSBs I should be aware of?

Any advice on how to fix this or what to tell the dealership would be great. I rely on this system daily!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Uconnect system issues, including freezing and random restarts, have been reported across various Ram models and model years, including the 2020 Ram 2500 with the 12-inch screen. These issues are typically software-related, but can sometimes stem from hardware.

  1. Common Causes:

    • Software Glitches: The most frequent cause is a bug or corruption within the Uconnect operating system.
    • Outdated Software: Running an older version of the Uconnect software can lead to instability and compatibility issues.
    • Hardware Malfunction: Less common, but a failing head unit or internal component can cause these symptoms.
    • Accessory Interference: Rarely, a connected USB device or a faulty SD card can cause system instability.
  2. Troubleshooting Steps:

    • Check for Software Updates: The first step is to check if your Uconnect system has the latest software. You can often do this through the Uconnect system settings (Settings > System Information > Check for Updates) or by visiting the Ram Uconnect website with your VIN.
    • Hard Reset: Disconnect the negative battery terminal for 15-30 minutes. This can sometimes clear persistent glitches by fully cycling power to all modules.
    • Remove External Devices: Unplug any USB devices, SD cards, or phones connected to the system to rule out external interference.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • If software updates and resets don't resolve the issue, it's time to visit your Ram dealership. They have specialized diagnostic tools to check for specific Uconnect module errors.
    • They can also perform a forced software reflash, which is more comprehensive than an over-the-air update.
    • Be sure to mention any specific patterns you've noticed (e.g., only with navigation active, or after a phone call). The dealership can check for relevant Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) that address known Uconnect issues for your specific model year and screen size. In some cases, a head unit replacement may be necessary under warranty.
