Vehicle: 2020 Ram 2500 Limited

Hi all,

My 2020 Ram 2500 Limited has been having intermittent issues with the Uconnect system. The large touchscreen will randomly freeze, go completely black, or sometimes just reboot itself while I'm driving. It's really annoying, especially when I'm using navigation or the backup camera.

I've tried doing the soft reset (holding down the volume and tuner buttons), and that sometimes works temporarily, but the problem always comes back. Is this a common issue with the newer Ram trucks? What could be causing this, and is there a permanent fix?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Issues with the Uconnect infotainment system, such as freezing, black screens, or random reboots, are not uncommon across various Stellantis vehicles, including Ram trucks. These problems can stem from several sources within the electrical and electronics system.

Common Causes:

  1. Software Glitches: The most frequent cause is often a bug in the Uconnect software. Updates are regularly released to address these.
  2. Hardware Malfunction: The Uconnect head unit itself (the radio/display module) can develop internal faults.
  3. Loose Connections: A loose or corroded electrical connection to the head unit or its associated modules can cause intermittent power or data loss.
  4. Voltage Fluctuations: Issues with the vehicle's charging system or battery can sometimes manifest as erratic behavior in sensitive electronics.
  5. Overheating: In rare cases, the head unit might overheat, causing it to shut down or malfunction.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Check for Software Updates: Visit your Ram dealer or check the official Uconnect website for any available software updates for your specific VIN. Many issues are resolved with a simple update.
  2. Perform a Hard Reset: Disconnect the negative battery terminal for 15-30 minutes. This can sometimes clear out corrupted memory in the modules.
  3. Inspect Fuses: Locate the fuse for the Uconnect system (check your owner's manual) and ensure it's not blown and is seated correctly.
  4. Check for OBD Codes: While not always present for infotainment issues, a scan tool might reveal 'U' codes (network communication errors) or 'B' codes (body electrical) related to the infotainment system or Body Control Module (BCM).

When to See a Shop: If software updates and resets don't resolve the issue, or if the problem becomes more frequent and severe, it's time to visit a Ram dealership. They can perform advanced diagnostics, check for internal module faults, and determine if a replacement of the Uconnect head unit or related components is necessary. This is especially important if the issue affects critical functions like the backup camera.
