Vehicle: 2022 Ram 3500 Laramie Longhorn

Hello Ram owners,

I'm having a serious issue with the Integrated Trailer Brake Controller (ITBC) on my 2022 Ram 3500 Laramie Longhorn. When I connect my trailer, the truck either says 'Trailer Not Connected' or 'Check Trailer Wiring' even though I've checked all the connections multiple times and the trailer lights work fine.

Sometimes it will briefly recognize the trailer, but then the brakes won't engage properly, or I get an error message on the dash. This is a factory ITBC, not an aftermarket one. I've tried different trailers, and the problem persists, so I know it's the truck.

Has anyone experienced this with their newer Ram 3500? Is it a common issue with the ITBC module or wiring? I'm worried about towing safely.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Issues with the Integrated Trailer Brake Controller (ITBC) on newer Ram trucks, especially the 2500/3500 series, can be frustrating and pose a safety concern. Since you've confirmed the issue isn't with the trailer, we can focus on the truck's system.

Common Causes for ITBC Malfunctions:

  • Faulty Trailer Connection: Even if lights work, specific pins for brake control might be corroded or bent in the truck's 7-pin connector.
  • ITBC Module Failure: The module itself, located behind the dash, can fail internally.
  • Wiring Harness Issues: Damage or corrosion in the wiring harness leading to the ITBC module or the trailer connector.
  • Software Glitches: The Body Control Module (BCM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM) might have software issues affecting ITBC communication.
  • Grounding Problems: Poor ground connections for the trailer wiring or the ITBC module.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Inspect Truck's 7-Pin Connector: Thoroughly clean and inspect the truck's 7-pin trailer connector for corrosion, bent pins, or debris. Use dielectric grease when reconnecting.
  2. Check Trailer Settings: Ensure the trailer type and brake gain settings in your Uconnect system are correctly configured for the trailer you are using.
  3. Perform a Hard Reset: Disconnect the negative battery terminal for 15-30 minutes to reset all modules, including the BCM and ITBC. This can sometimes clear temporary glitches.
  4. Check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): Use an OBD-II scanner. Look for codes related to communication or the brake system. Common codes might include:
    • U0140: Lost Communication with Body Control Module (could affect ITBC communication).
    • C0034: Trailer Brake Control Module Fault (specific to the ITBC).
    • U0121: Lost Communication with Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Control Module (ABS is often integrated with brake control).

When to See a Shop:

  • If cleaning connections and resetting the system doesn't resolve the issue.
  • If you consistently get specific ITBC-related error messages or DTCs.
  • If the problem is intermittent and difficult to diagnose yourself.
  • A dealership or specialized truck service center has the proper diagnostic tools (like WiTECH) to communicate directly with the ITBC module, check its calibration, and diagnose internal faults or wiring issues that are not easily visible.
