Vehicle: 2022 Ram 3500 Laramie

I'm having an issue with the LED headlights on my 2022 Ram 3500 Laramie. The driver's side headlight has started flickering intermittently, and sometimes it just goes out completely. When it goes out, I get a 'Service Headlights' message on the dash. Turning the truck off and on sometimes brings it back, but the flickering always returns.

I've checked the connections at the back of the headlight assembly, and they seem secure. Is this a common problem with the LED headlights on these newer Ram HD trucks? Could it be a bad LED module, a wiring issue, or something with the BCM?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Flickering or inoperative LED headlights with a 'Service Headlights' message on newer Ram trucks often point to specific electrical issues within the complex LED lighting system.

  1. Loose or Corroded Connections: Even if they appear secure, thoroughly inspect the electrical connectors at the back of the headlight assembly and any associated wiring harnesses. Corrosion or a slightly loose pin can cause intermittent power delivery.
  2. Faulty LED Driver Module: Modern LED headlights often use a separate driver module (ballast) to regulate power to the LED array. If this module fails, it can cause flickering, dimming, or complete failure of the LED unit. This is a common point of failure.
  3. Internal Headlight Assembly Issue: The LED array itself or internal wiring within the sealed headlight assembly could be failing. If the driver module is integrated, the entire assembly might need replacement.
  4. Body Control Module (BCM) Communication: The BCM controls the vehicle's lighting systems. A communication error or an internal fault within the BCM could potentially cause headlight issues, though this is less common for a single headlight.
  5. Voltage Fluctuations: While less likely for a single headlight, general vehicle voltage fluctuations could affect sensitive LED components. Ensure your battery and charging system are healthy.

When to See a Shop:

  • If inspecting connections doesn't resolve the issue.
  • If the 'Service Headlights' message persists, as this indicates a fault detected by the vehicle's computer.
  • A dealership or specialized automotive electrical shop has the diagnostic tools to read specific DTCs related to the lighting system (e.g., B1000-series codes for BCM or lighting faults). They can accurately diagnose whether it's the LED driver, the headlight assembly, or a wiring/BCM issue, and perform necessary replacements or repairs, which can be complex with integrated LED systems.
