Vehicle: 2022 Ram 3500 Limited

Hello everyone,

I'm having an issue with the headlights on my 2022 Ram 3500 Limited. They've started flickering intermittently, sometimes one side, sometimes both. It's not constant, but it's noticeable, especially at night, and it's starting to concern me for safety reasons. Occasionally, one headlight will even go out completely for a few seconds before coming back on.

I've checked the bulbs, and they seem fine – no obvious signs of burning out. This truck has the LED headlights, so I'm wondering if it's a wiring issue, a bad ballast/driver, or something with the Body Control Module (BCM). It's still a relatively new truck, so I'm surprised to be having this kind of electrical problem.

Has anyone with a newer Ram experienced flickering LED headlights? What was the fix? Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Flickering or intermittent LED headlights on a newer vehicle like your 2022 Ram 3500 Limited can be caused by several factors, often related to the complex electrical systems controlling them:

  1. Check Connections and Grounds: Visually inspect the wiring harnesses and connectors leading to both headlight assemblies. Look for any signs of corrosion, looseness, or damage. Ensure all ground points for the headlight circuits are clean and secure. A poor ground connection is a common cause of flickering.
  2. Inspect LED Driver Modules: Modern LED headlights often use external driver modules (ballasts) to regulate power. A failing driver module can cause flickering or intermittent operation. These are usually integrated into the headlight assembly or mounted nearby.
  3. Battery and Charging System Health: While less common for just headlights, an unstable voltage supply from a weak battery or an alternator with an intermittent fault can sometimes manifest as flickering lights. Have your battery and charging system tested.
  4. OBD-II Scan for BCM Faults: The Body Control Module (BCM) controls many electrical functions, including lighting. A diagnostic scan might reveal codes related to the BCM or lighting circuits, such as B1000 (BCM internal fault) or B1001 (Headlamp circuit fault). These codes would indicate a problem with the BCM's ability to properly power or control the headlights.

Common Causes:

  • Loose or corroded wiring/connectors.
  • Faulty LED driver module/ballast.
  • Internal fault within the headlight assembly itself.
  • Issues with the Body Control Module (BCM).
  • Voltage fluctuations.

When to See a Shop: Given that your truck is a 2022 model and has complex LED lighting, it's highly recommended to take it to a Ram dealership. They have the specialized diagnostic tools to accurately pinpoint whether the issue is with the headlight assembly, its driver module, the wiring harness, or the BCM. Attempting to diagnose or replace these components yourself can be difficult and may void warranties. This is especially true if a BCM replacement or reprogramming is required.
