Vehicle: 2023 Rivian R1S Adventure

I own a 2023 Rivian R1S Adventure, and with the colder weather setting in, I've noticed an issue with the door handles. Specifically, the driver's side front and rear handles sometimes fail to present themselves when I approach the vehicle or press the button.

I have to manually pry them out or try multiple times.

This is quite annoying and feels like a design flaw for a vehicle meant for all conditions. Has anyone found a workaround or a permanent fix for this?

  1. Common Causes: Issues with Rivian door handles, especially in cold weather, can be attributed to several factors:
    • Ice Buildup: The primary suspect in cold conditions. Ice can prevent the handle mechanism from extending or retracting fully.
    • Actuator Malfunction: The electric motor (actuator) that powers the handle presentation might be failing or struggling, especially if it's exposed to moisture or extreme temperatures.
    • Sensor Issues: Sensors that detect handle proximity or position might be faulty, preventing the system from triggering correctly.
    • Software Glitch: Less common, but a software bug could intermittently prevent the handles from operating.
  2. Temporary Workarounds:
    • Gently tap around the handle area to dislodge ice.
    • Use a de-icer spray (ensure it's safe for automotive paint and plastic) or warm water (sparingly, to avoid re-freezing).
    • Ensure the vehicle is fully unlocked and try locking/unlocking again.
  3. Diagnostic Codes: A Rivian service technician can check for Body Control Module (BCM) related diagnostic codes (B-codes). Examples might include:
    • B12xx: Related to door module or latch issues.
    • B2xxx: General body electrical issues.
    • Specific codes for door handle actuator circuits.
  4. When to See a Shop: If the problem is persistent, affects multiple handles, or occurs even in warmer temperatures, it indicates a mechanical or electrical fault that requires professional attention. Rivian service can inspect the actuators, wiring, and sensors, and check for any relevant Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) related to door handle operation in cold climates. Attempting to force a stuck handle can cause further damage.
