Vehicle: 2024 Rivian R1S Quad-Motor

My 2024 Rivian R1S Quad-Motor has started to pull noticeably to the right, and I've also observed some uneven wear on the front right tire. It's not extreme, but I have to constantly correct the steering wheel to keep it straight, which is tiring on longer drives.

I haven't hit any major potholes recently that I can recall, and the problem seems to have developed gradually over the last few weeks. The tire wear is more pronounced on the outer edge of the front right tire.

Could this be an alignment issue, or something more serious with the suspension or steering components? What should I be looking for?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A vehicle pulling to one side and exhibiting uneven tire wear on your 2024 Rivian R1S are classic symptoms of an issue within the steering or suspension system. Addressing this promptly is crucial for safety, tire longevity, and driving comfort.

Common Causes:

  • Wheel Alignment: This is the most common culprit. Hitting minor bumps, potholes, or even just normal wear and tear can throw off the alignment angles (camber, caster, toe) of your wheels, causing the vehicle to pull and leading to uneven tire wear.
  • Worn Suspension Components: Components like tie rods, control arm bushings, ball joints, or wheel bearings can wear out over time. Play in these parts can affect wheel geometry and cause pulling.
  • Tire Issues: While less likely to cause a pull and uneven wear on a specific tire simultaneously, an improperly inflated tire, a damaged tire (e.g., separated belt), or an out-of-balance tire can contribute to pulling and unusual wear patterns.
  • Brake Drag: A caliper that is sticking or not fully releasing on one side can cause a slight drag, pulling the vehicle in that direction and potentially causing localized tire wear.
  • Steering System Issues: Problems with the power steering system, steering rack, or steering angle sensor could also contribute, though usually with other symptoms like difficulty steering or warning lights.

Potential OBD Codes:

  • U0420: Invalid Data Received From Steering Angle Sensor Module (if sensor related)
  • Other codes related to power steering assist if it's an electronic power steering issue.

What You Can Do:

  1. Check Tire Pressure: Ensure all tires are inflated to the manufacturer's recommended pressure. An under-inflated tire can cause a pull.
  2. Visual Inspection: Look for any obvious damage to the suspension components (bent parts, torn boots on ball joints/tie rods) around the front right wheel.
  3. Tire Rotation/Balance: While not a fix for an alignment issue, rotating tires can sometimes temporarily mask a pull or reveal if a specific tire is the problem. Balancing ensures smooth rotation.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately: If the pulling is severe, if you hear clunking or popping noises from the suspension, or if the steering feels loose or unresponsive. These could indicate a critical component failure.
  • Soon: For any persistent pull and especially with visible uneven tire wear. A professional alignment shop or Rivian service center has the specialized equipment to accurately measure your wheel alignment angles and diagnose worn suspension or steering components. Ignoring alignment issues leads to premature tire replacement and can compromise vehicle handling and safety.
