Vehicle: 2024 Rivian R1S Launch Edition

I have a 2024 Rivian R1S Launch Edition, and for the past week, it's been refusing to charge past 80%. This happens both on my home Level 2 charger and at public DC fast chargers. It just stops, and sometimes I get a "Charging Interrupted" message on the screen.

I've tried different cables and charging stations, but the result is always the same. Before this, it would charge to 100% without issues if I set it to. The Rivian app also shows the interruption.

Is this a known issue? Could it be a software glitch or something more serious with the battery or charging system?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

It's frustrating when your Rivian R1S consistently stops charging at 80%, especially when it's happening across multiple charging types and locations. This points to an issue internal to the vehicle rather than the charging infrastructure.

Potential Causes:

  1. Battery Management System (BMS) Fault: The BMS monitors individual battery cells and overall pack health. If it detects an anomaly, such as a cell imbalance or temperature issue, it might prematurely terminate charging to prevent damage.
  2. Onboard Charger (OBC) Malfunction: For Level 2 AC charging, the OBC converts AC to DC. A fault here could prevent the vehicle from accepting a full charge. While DC fast charging bypasses the OBC, a related control module issue could still affect both.
  3. Charging Port or Communication Issue: Less likely if it's consistently 80% and not a complete failure, but a faulty charging port or its communication lines could intermittently disrupt the charging handshake.
  4. Software Glitch: A bug in the vehicle's software controlling charging parameters could cause an incorrect termination. This is often fixable with an over-the-air (OTA) update.

Diagnostics:

While specific codes might not always be displayed to the user, a service center could find codes like:

  • P0AA4: Hybrid Battery Voltage System Isolation Fault
  • P0D2F: EVSE Communication Error (though less likely if it charges to 80%)
  • P0A60: Battery Energy Control Module Performance

When to See a Shop:

  1. Check for Updates: First, ensure your R1S has the latest software updates. Sometimes, a known bug can be resolved this way.
  2. Hard Reset (if comfortable): You can try a soft reset of the infotainment system (holding the steering wheel buttons) or, if familiar with the procedure, a full vehicle reset (consult your owner's manual or Rivian support for exact steps).
  3. Contact Rivian Service: If the issue persists after checking for updates and attempting a reset, it's crucial to schedule a service appointment. The consistent 80% cutoff suggests a deeper diagnostic is needed to pinpoint whether it's the BMS, OBC, or another component. Driving the vehicle is generally safe, but its utility is diminished if you can't reliably charge it to full capacity.
