Vehicle: 2023 Rivian R1S Adventure

Hi Rivian community,

I'm having some trouble with the parking assist sensors on my 2023 Rivian R1S Adventure. They've started giving constant false alarms, even when there's absolutely nothing close to the vehicle. It's particularly bad after it rains or right after a car wash, but it also happens on dry days.

Sometimes, the front camera view also seems to glitch out or freeze for a second. It's making parking maneuvers really stressful and I'm worried about hitting something because of the unreliable warnings. Has anyone else experienced this with their R1S?

False alarms from parking assist sensors are a common complaint, especially in varying weather conditions. Here’s what you should investigate:

  1. Clean the Sensors:

    • The most frequent cause of false alarms is dirty or obstructed ultrasonic sensors. These small, circular sensors are typically located in your front and rear bumpers. Thoroughly clean them with a soft cloth and mild soap and water to remove any dirt, mud, ice, or even dried bug residue.
    • Ensure they are completely dry, as moisture can temporarily interfere with their operation.
  2. Check for Physical Damage:

    • Inspect each sensor for any signs of physical damage, such as cracks, dents, or if any appear to be pushed inward. Even a slight misalignment can affect their accuracy.
  3. Camera Lenses:

    • Since you mentioned the front camera glitching, also clean the lens for your front camera. Dirt or smudges can affect its image quality and potentially impact the visual input for parking assistance.
  4. Software Glitch/Reset:

    • Sometimes, a temporary software bug can cause sensor malfunctions. Try performing a soft reset of your Rivian's infotainment system (refer to your owner's manual for the exact procedure, usually holding specific steering wheel buttons). This can sometimes clear minor electronic glitches.

When to See a Shop: If cleaning and a system reset don't resolve the issue, it's advisable to schedule a service appointment with Rivian. The problem could be due to:

  • A faulty sensor that needs replacement.
  • A wiring issue to one or more sensors.
  • A problem with the parking assist control module.
  • A more significant software bug requiring a diagnostic update or deeper troubleshooting by a technician. Intermittent issues can be challenging but are important for safety.
