Vehicle: 2021 Rivian R1T Launch Edition

Hello everyone,

I have a 2021 Rivian R1T Launch Edition, and for the past few weeks, the 12V battery seems to be draining overnight. I often wake up to a "Vehicle Shutting Down" message on the app, and sometimes I can't even unlock the doors with the app or key fob until I jump-start the 12V battery. This is happening every few days now.

I've checked for any lights left on or accessories plugged in, but I can't find anything obvious that would cause a parasitic drain. It's a huge inconvenience and I'm worried about being stranded. Has anyone else experienced this with their R1T?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A draining 12V battery in an EV like your Rivian R1T is a serious concern, as it powers all the auxiliary systems, including door locks, infotainment, and the systems that 'wake up' the high-voltage battery. Here's what to consider:

  1. 12V Battery Health:

    • Even though the vehicle is relatively new, the 12V battery can sometimes fail prematurely or develop an internal short. A failing battery may not hold a charge effectively. A service center can perform a load test to determine its health.
  2. Parasitic Drain:

    • While you've checked for obvious culprits, a parasitic drain can be subtle. This is when an electrical component continues to draw power even when the vehicle is off. Common culprits can include:
      • Aftermarket accessories not properly wired.
      • Faulty modules (e.g., infotainment, telematics) that aren't 'sleeping' correctly.
      • Stuck relays.
  3. DC-DC Converter:

    • The 12V battery in an EV is charged by a DC-DC converter, which takes power from the high-voltage battery. If this converter is faulty, it won't properly replenish the 12V battery, leading to discharge. A diagnostic scan could reveal codes related to this, such as P0A1F (DC/DC Converter Fault).
  4. Vehicle 'Sleep' State:

    • Ensure your vehicle is entering its proper 'sleep' or 'deep sleep' mode when parked. Frequent 'waking' by the app or persistent sensor activity can prevent it from fully shutting down and contribute to drain.

When to See a Shop: Given the persistent nature and critical function of the 12V battery, it's highly recommended to schedule a service appointment with Rivian immediately. They have the specialized tools to:

  • Perform comprehensive diagnostics, including checking for specific OBD codes like B1215 (Battery Voltage Low).
  • Conduct a parasitic draw test to pinpoint the exact component causing the drain.
  • Test the health of the 12V battery and the functionality of the DC-DC converter.
  • Apply any necessary software updates that might address power management issues. Ignoring this could lead to being stranded.
