Vehicle: 2022 Rivian R1T Adventure

My 2022 Rivian R1T Adventure is having issues with its air suspension. Lately, the front passenger side seems to be sagging, especially after parking overnight. It looks noticeably lower than the other sides.

I also got a "Suspension System Fault" warning on the dash a couple of times, which clears after driving for a bit but then reappears. It sometimes corrects itself while driving, but then sags again when parked.

What could be going on? Is this a common problem with early R1T models, or something I should be seriously concerned about?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A sagging air suspension on your 2022 Rivian R1T, especially accompanied by a "Suspension System Fault" warning, indicates a problem that needs attention. Air suspension systems rely on a delicate balance of air pressure, sensors, and mechanical components.

Common Causes:

  • Air Leak: The most frequent cause is a leak in an air spring (air bag), air line, or fitting. Even a small leak can cause a gradual sag overnight.
  • Faulty Ride Height Sensor: Each corner of the vehicle has a sensor that tells the suspension control module the current height. If a sensor is faulty, it can send incorrect readings, leading to uneven ride height.
  • Compressor Issues: The air compressor is responsible for maintaining air pressure. If it's weak or failing, it might struggle to inflate the air springs adequately.
  • Suspension Control Module (SCM) Malfunction: Less common, but a faulty SCM can misinterpret data or fail to command the system correctly.

Potential OBD Codes:

  • C0550: Suspension Control Module Performance
  • C0575: Front Left Air Suspension Solenoid Valve Circuit (or similar for other corners)

What You Can Do:

  1. Visual Inspection: Look for any obvious damage to the air springs (cracks, tears) or air lines around the sagging corner. Listen for hissing sounds after parking.
  2. Restart Vehicle: Sometimes a simple full power cycle can reset a temporary sensor glitch. If the problem persists, it's not a temporary glitch.
  3. Check for Recalls/TSBs: Rivian may have issued technical service bulletins (TSBs) or recalls related to suspension components for your model year. Check with a Rivian service center.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately: If the vehicle becomes undriveable due to extreme sagging, or if the warning light remains illuminated and you notice a significant change in handling or braking.
  • Soon: For persistent sagging, recurring warning lights, or if you cannot identify a simple cause. Driving with a compromised suspension can lead to uneven tire wear, reduced handling, and potentially unsafe driving conditions. A professional can perform a diagnostic scan to pinpoint the exact fault code and conduct a thorough inspection of the air suspension system, including pressure tests and component checks.
