Vehicle: 2022 Rivian R1T Launch Edition

Hey everyone,

I've been having a persistent issue with my 2022 Rivian R1T Launch Edition's charging port. Sometimes, when I plug in the charger (both AC Level 2 and DC fast chargers), the latch doesn't engage properly. It feels like it clicks, but then the charger can be pulled out easily, and charging won't initiate.

I've tried wiggling the connector, re-inserting it multiple times, and even trying different chargers, but the problem seems to be with the vehicle's port itself. It's intermittent, which makes it even more frustrating. One day it works fine, the next it takes 5-10 tries to get it to lock in.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a known fix or something I might be overlooking before I schedule a service appointment? It's becoming a real hassle to reliably charge my truck.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

This is a common concern that can arise with EV charging ports. The latching mechanism is crucial for both secure connection and safety during charging.

Possible Causes:

  1. Debris/Obstruction: Small debris (dust, leaves, dirt) can sometimes get lodged in the latching mechanism or around the charging pins, preventing a full engagement.
  2. Latch Mechanism Wear/Damage: Over time, the physical latch components can wear down or become slightly misaligned, leading to intermittent engagement failures.
  3. Electrical Contact Issues: While less common for a physical latch issue, poor electrical contact can sometimes prevent the vehicle from signaling the latch to fully engage, even if the physical mechanism seems to move.
  4. Software Glitch: In rare cases, a software bug could affect the charging port's ability to properly detect a connection and engage the latch.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Inspect Visually: Carefully examine the charging port for any visible debris, bent pins, or signs of physical damage to the latch mechanism itself. Use a flashlight if necessary. Do not use metal objects to clean. A blast of compressed air can help dislodge dust.
  2. Try a Different Charger/Location: While you've tried different chargers, ensure you've tested at various locations (home, public AC, public DCFC) to rule out a charger-specific issue.
  3. Soft Reset: Try performing a soft reset of your vehicle's infotainment system (refer to your owner's manual for the exact procedure) to rule out minor software glitches.

When to See a Shop:

  • If visual inspection reveals no obvious debris but the problem persists.
  • If the issue becomes more frequent or completely prevents charging.
  • If you notice any error messages on your Rivian's display related to charging or the charging port.
  • If you suspect physical damage to the port or latch mechanism.

This issue typically requires a service technician to diagnose and potentially replace the charging port assembly. There are generally no OBD codes directly for a mechanical latch failure, but if charging communication errors occur, codes like P0D01 (Charge Connector Malfunction) might appear in advanced diagnostics.
