Vehicle: 2022 Rivian R1T Adventure

Hey everyone,

I'm having an issue with the power tonneau cover on my 2022 Rivian R1T Adventure. Lately, it's been getting stuck about halfway when trying to close, or sometimes it closes but then immediately reopens a few inches. It also makes a bit of a grinding noise when it struggles.

I've tried cleaning out the tracks as best I can, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. It's really frustrating, especially when I need to secure items in the bed. Has anyone else experienced this with their R1T?

What was the fix for you? Is this something I can troubleshoot myself, or am I looking at a service appointment? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

The power tonneau cover on early Rivian R1T models, including your 2022 Adventure, has been a known area for concern for some owners. Several factors can contribute to the issues you're describing:

  1. Debris in Tracks: Even after cleaning, small debris, dirt, or ice can accumulate in the intricate track system, obstructing the cover's movement.
  2. Alignment Issues: Over time, the cover's alignment can shift slightly, causing it to bind or get stuck. This often manifests as grinding noises as the motor struggles against resistance.
  3. Motor or Gearbox Failure: The electric motor or its internal gearbox responsible for operating the cover can wear out or fail, leading to intermittent operation or complete stoppage.
  4. Software Glitches: Less common, but sometimes a software anomaly can cause the cover's sensors to misinterpret its position, leading to erratic behavior like reopening after closing.
  5. Cable Tension/Damage: The cables that pull the cover can stretch, fray, or become misaligned, impacting smooth operation.

What to do:

  1. Thorough Inspection: With the cover open, carefully inspect the entire length of both tracks for any hidden debris, kinks, or damage. Use a flashlight.
  2. Lubrication: If the tracks appear clear, a light application of a silicone-based lubricant (specifically designed for plastics and rubber) on the track surfaces might help reduce friction. Avoid petroleum-based lubricants.
  3. Manual Reset (if possible): Some owners have reported temporary success by manually assisting the cover to close or open while pressing the button, but be cautious not to force it.
  4. Check for TSBs: Rivian has issued Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) related to the tonneau cover for certain VIN ranges. Your service center can check if your vehicle is covered by any relevant TSBs that address these issues.

When to see a shop: You should schedule a service appointment with Rivian if:

  • The issue persists after cleaning and a light lubrication.
  • You hear significant grinding or straining noises from the motor.
  • The cover completely stops operating.
  • You suspect physical damage to the cover, tracks, or cables.
  • The problem is intermittent and unpredictable.

Rivian service centers are equipped with specialized tools and diagnostics to properly identify the root cause, whether it's a mechanical failure, alignment issue, or a component replacement like the motor or entire cover assembly. This is generally not a DIY repair for most owners.
