Vehicle: 2022 Rivian R1T Launch Edition

Hey everyone,

I'm experiencing a concerning issue with my 2022 Rivian R1T Launch Edition. While driving yesterday, I suddenly got a "Reduced Performance" message on the display, and the truck felt like it lost a significant amount of power. It also illuminated a couple of warning lights, though I can't recall the exact symbols right now.

The truck is still drivable, but it's definitely not performing as it should. I tried restarting it after parking for a bit, but the message and reduced power persisted. I'm worried about driving it too much like this.

Has anyone else with a 2022 R1T or even an R1S encountered something similar? What was the cause, and what did your service center say? Any advice would be greatly appreciated before I schedule a service appointment.

Experiencing a 'Reduced Performance' mode with warning lights in your 2022 Rivian R1T is a critical indicator that the vehicle's high-voltage system or drivetrain components are detecting an anomaly. This mode is designed to protect the vehicle from further damage and ensure some level of mobility.

Here are potential causes and steps:

  1. Diagnostic Scan: The first and most crucial step is to get a diagnostic scan. While Rivian uses proprietary systems, a generic OBD-II scanner might show a P-code related to the high-voltage system, such as P0A0F (Engine Disabled) or P0A7A (Drive Motor 'A' Inverter Performance), indicating an issue with the electric motor or its control unit. Rivian service will have more specific codes.
  2. High-Voltage Battery System Fault: Issues within the battery pack, such as a cell imbalance, a faulty battery management system (BMS) sensor, or a problem with the high-voltage contactors, can trigger reduced power. The BMS is crucial for monitoring the health and safety of the battery.
  3. Electric Motor or Inverter Malfunction: Each Rivian motor has an inverter that converts DC power from the battery into AC power for the motor. A fault in one of these inverters or the motor itself (e.g., a sensor issue, overheating, or internal damage) can lead to reduced power, especially if it affects one of the drive units.
  4. Thermal Management System: Overheating of the battery, motors, or inverters can force the vehicle into a reduced power state to prevent damage. Check if you were driving in extreme conditions or if the vehicle was recently fast-charging.
  5. Software Glitch: Less common, but sometimes a software bug can cause erroneous warnings. However, given the 'Reduced Performance' mode, a physical fault is more likely.

When to See a Shop: You should schedule a service appointment with Rivian immediately. Do not ignore this warning. Driving with reduced performance can potentially exacerbate the underlying issue or leave you stranded. Provide the service center with as much detail as possible about when and how the issue occurred. They will perform a comprehensive diagnostic scan using their specialized tools to pinpoint the exact component causing the fault and perform necessary repairs or replacements.
