Vehicle: 2022 Rivian R1T Adventure

Hey everyone,

I'm experiencing a concerning issue with my 2022 Rivian R1T Adventure. A few days ago, while driving, I got a 'Service Vehicle Soon' message on the dash, and immediately noticed a significant reduction in power. It felt like the truck went into a limp mode.

I tried pulling over, turning the vehicle off and on again, but the message persists, and the power is still limited. It's making highway driving pretty stressful. I've only got about 15,000 miles on it, and this came out of nowhere.

Has anyone else encountered this with their R1T? I'm wondering if it's a known software bug or something more serious with one of the drive units. Any advice on what I should check before contacting service?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

It sounds like your 2022 Rivian R1T is indeed in a protective 'limp mode' due to a detected fault within the powertrain system. This is a common safety mechanism in electric vehicles to prevent further damage when a critical issue is identified.

Here are some steps and potential causes:

  1. Initial Troubleshooting:

    • Full Vehicle Reboot: Try performing a full vehicle reboot (often involves holding specific steering wheel buttons or accessing a menu option, consult your owner's manual for the exact procedure). This can sometimes clear transient software glitches.
    • Check Charging: Ensure your charging port is clean and that the vehicle has been charging normally. While less likely to cause limp mode directly, a faulty charging system component could sometimes trigger related errors.
  2. Potential Causes:

    • Drive Unit Fault: The most common cause for sudden power reduction in an EV like the Rivian R1T is a fault within one of the electric drive units (motors, inverters, or associated sensors). This could be anything from a sensor malfunction to an internal component issue.
    • High Voltage Battery System Issue: Problems with the battery management system (BMS), a contactor, or a cell imbalance can also trigger a 'Service Vehicle Soon' message and reduced power.
    • Thermal Management System: Overheating in a drive unit or the battery pack, or a fault in the cooling system, can force the vehicle into limp mode to protect components.
    • Software Glitch: While less common for persistent issues, a software bug could misinterpret sensor data, leading to an erroneous fault.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • Given that the issue persists after a basic restart and significantly impacts driving, it is imperative to schedule service with Rivian immediately. The 'Service Vehicle Soon' message indicates a detected fault that requires professional diagnosis.
    • Rivian vehicles use proprietary diagnostic tools, and while general OBD-II scanners can read some basic codes, specific Rivian fault codes (which would be internal to their system, not standard OBD-II P-codes for this type of issue) will provide the most accurate diagnosis.
    • Continuing to drive with reduced power and a 'Service Vehicle Soon' warning could potentially exacerbate the underlying problem or lead to further complications. It's best to avoid long trips or high-speed driving until the issue is resolved by a certified Rivian technician.
