Vehicle: 2022 Rivian R1T Launch Edition

Hey everyone, I'm having a bit of a scare with my 2022 Rivian R1T, Launch Edition. Yesterday, while driving, I got a 'Service Vehicle Soon' message on the dash, followed by a noticeable reduction in power. It felt like the truck was in a limited performance mode.

I managed to get it home, and now it's parked. I tried turning it off and on again, but the message persists. I don't have an OBD-II scanner that can read Rivian-specific codes, but I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this? Could it be a 12V battery issue, or something more serious with the main battery pack?

Any insights or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated before I call service. I'm hoping it's something simple I can check.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The 'Service Vehicle Soon' message combined with reduced power in your 2022 Rivian R1T is a critical warning that requires immediate attention. This often indicates an issue within the high-voltage system or a critical component failure.

Possible Causes:

  1. High-Voltage Battery System Fault: This is a common cause for reduced power and service warnings in EVs. It could involve issues with battery cell balancing, a faulty contactor, or a problem within the Battery Management System (BMS). OBD-II codes like P0AA6 (Hybrid Battery Voltage System Isolation Fault) or Rivian-specific codes related to the high-voltage system are possible.
  2. Motor or Inverter Malfunction: Problems with one of the electric motors or its associated inverter can trigger limp mode to prevent further damage. This could be due to overheating, internal component failure, or sensor issues.
  3. 12V Battery Degradation: While less likely to cause immediate reduced power without other symptoms, a failing 12V auxiliary battery can cause a cascade of electrical issues, affecting various control modules and leading to erroneous warnings or system shutdowns.
  4. Software Glitch: Less common for persistent reduced power, but a software bug could potentially trigger incorrect warnings. However, the reduced power indicates a physical or electrical limitation.

Recommended Steps:

  1. Do Not Drive: If the vehicle is in reduced power mode, it's safest not to drive it until diagnosed. Further driving could exacerbate the issue or strand you.
  2. Check 12V Battery (If Accessible/Comfortable): While unlikely to be the sole cause of reduced power, ensure your 12V battery terminals are clean and tight. If you have a multimeter, check its voltage (should be >12.4V when off).
  3. Contact Rivian Service: This type of warning almost always requires professional diagnostic tools specific to Rivian. They can read proprietary fault codes and pinpoint the exact issue. Use the Rivian app or call their service line to schedule a mobile service visit or a tow to a service center.

When to See a Shop:

Immediately. Any 'Service Vehicle Soon' message accompanied by reduced power in an EV, especially a Rivian, indicates a potentially serious issue with the powertrain or high-voltage system. Attempting to clear codes or ignore the warning is not recommended. Rivian's diagnostic equipment and specialized technicians are necessary to safely and effectively resolve this problem.
