Vehicle: 2023 Rivian R1T Adventure

Hey everyone,

I'm having a persistent issue with my 2023 Rivian R1T's air suspension. Lately, it seems like the truck isn't leveling properly, especially after I park it overnight or when I switch between drive modes like 'All-Purpose' and 'Sport'. Sometimes one corner looks noticeably lower than the others.

To make things worse, I'm now getting a 'Suspension Service Required' message on the dash. It's not constant, but it pops up frequently, which is pretty concerning for a vehicle this new. I've tried restarting the vehicle a few times, but the problem keeps coming back.

Has anyone else experienced this with their R1T? What was the cause, and how did you get it resolved? Any advice before I schedule a service appointment would be greatly appreciated!

It sounds like you're dealing with a common concern for vehicles equipped with advanced air suspension systems, including the Rivian R1T. The 'Suspension Service Required' message, coupled with uneven leveling, indicates a potential issue that needs attention.

Here are the most common causes and what you can do:

  1. Air Leak in the System:

    • Cause: A small leak in an air spring (air bag), air line, or fitting can cause one or more corners of the vehicle to sag over time, especially when parked. The compressor then struggles to maintain pressure, leading to the error.
    • Action: Visually inspect around the air springs and lines for any obvious damage or signs of moisture. Sometimes a soapy water test can reveal small leaks.
  2. Faulty Ride Height Sensor:

    • Cause: Each corner of your R1T has a ride height sensor that tells the suspension control module the vehicle's current height. If a sensor is dirty, damaged, or malfunctioning, it can send incorrect readings, causing the system to misinterpret the vehicle's level or trigger an error.
    • Action: While difficult to diagnose without specialized tools, sometimes a visual check for debris or damage around the sensor linkages can be helpful.
  3. Air Suspension Compressor Issue:

    • Cause: The compressor is responsible for generating the air pressure needed to adjust the suspension. If it's failing, overworked due to a leak, or has a relay/fuse issue, it won't be able to inflate the system properly.
    • Action: Listen for unusual noises from the compressor when the vehicle is trying to adjust its height. A constantly running or very loud compressor can indicate a problem.
  4. Software Glitch or Calibration Issue:

    • Cause: Less common, but sometimes a software bug or a calibration issue can lead to incorrect leveling or error messages. Rivian vehicles receive over-the-air updates, and sometimes a minor glitch can occur.
    • Action: You've already tried restarting, which is a good first step. Ensure your vehicle's software is up to date.

When to See a Shop:

Given the 'Suspension Service Required' message and persistent leveling issues, it's highly recommended to schedule a service appointment with Rivian. They have the proprietary diagnostic tools to read specific Rivian fault codes (which might be in the C0XXX or UXXXX range for suspension/communication faults) and pinpoint the exact cause. Driving with a compromised suspension can affect handling, tire wear, and potentially lead to further damage. Do not delay professional inspection.
