Vehicle: 2023 Rivian R1T Launch Edition

Hey everyone,

I'm having some frustrating charging issues with my 2023 Rivian R1T Launch Edition. Lately, when I plug in, the charging port often doesn't seem to lock properly. I hear a click, but sometimes it feels loose, and other times it just won't initiate charging at all.

When it does charge, I've noticed the speeds are significantly slower than usual, both on my home Level 2 charger and at public DC fast chargers. It's taking much longer to get a full charge, and I'm worried something might be wrong with the charging system itself.

Has anyone else experienced this with their R1T? Any tips or troubleshooting steps I can try before I have to take it in for service? Thanks in advance!

It sounds like you're dealing with a common set of issues that can arise with EV charging systems. Here's a breakdown of potential causes and troubleshooting steps for your 2023 Rivian R1T:

  1. Inspect the Charging Port and Cable:

    • Debris: Carefully inspect your R1T's charging port for any dirt, dust, or foreign objects that might be obstructing the connection or the locking mechanism. Use compressed air if needed, but avoid anything that could damage the pins.
    • Cable Condition: Check your charging cable (both ends) for any signs of damage, fraying, or bent pins. A faulty cable can prevent proper connection and slow down charging. Try a different known-good cable if available.
  2. Software and Firmware:

    • Vehicle Software: Ensure your R1T's software is up to date. Rivian frequently releases updates that address charging performance and communication issues.
    • Charger Firmware: If using a home Level 2 charger, check if its firmware needs an update.
  3. 12V Battery Health:

    • The 12V auxiliary battery in EVs manages many critical systems, including charging communication and contactor engagement. A weak or failing 12V battery can cause intermittent charging issues, including the port not locking or charging not initiating. While not directly an OBD code, a 'Service Vehicle Soon' light might accompany 12V issues.
  4. Charging Contactor/Relay Issues:

    • Inside the vehicle, contactors or relays manage the flow of high-voltage power during charging. If these components are sticking or failing, it can lead to slow charging or complete failure to initiate. This would typically require professional diagnosis.
  5. Battery Management System (BMS) Faults:

    • The BMS monitors and controls the battery's health and charging process. A fault within the BMS could limit charging speeds or prevent charging. This might trigger specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to battery or charging system performance, such as P0AA6 (Hybrid Battery Voltage System Isolation Fault) or P0D27 (Charge Inlet Interlock Circuit Malfunction).

When to See a Shop: If you've checked for debris, tried different cables, ensured your software is updated, and the problem persists, it's time to schedule service with Rivian. Intermittent charging issues, especially those involving the port's locking mechanism or significantly reduced speeds, often indicate a hardware problem that requires specialized diagnostic tools and expertise. Continuing to use a faulty charging system could potentially lead to further damage or safety concerns.
