Vehicle: 2023 Rivian R1T Adventure

Hey everyone, I'm having a weird issue with my 2023 Rivian R1T Adventure. Lately, the charging port often doesn't latch properly when I plug in the cable, whether it's at home on my Level 2 charger or at a public DC fast charger. I have to wiggle it around a few times to get it to click in.

Even when it does latch, sometimes the charging speed seems really slow, much slower than usual. I've tried using different cables and even a different charger at a friend's house, but the problem persists. It's getting pretty frustrating, especially when I'm on a road trip and need a quick charge.

Has anyone else experienced this with their R1T? Any tips or tricks before I schedule a service appointment? I'm worried it might be a sensor or a module issue within the vehicle itself.

It sounds like you're dealing with a frustrating charging issue on your 2023 Rivian R1T. Problems with the charging port latching and inconsistent charging speeds often point to a few common culprits within the electrical and electronics system.

Here are some steps and potential causes to consider:

  1. Inspect the Charging Port:

    • Debris Check: Carefully examine the charging port on your R1T for any visible debris or foreign objects obstructing the latching mechanism or electrical contacts. Use a flashlight and compressed air to clear it.
    • Physical Damage: Look for any bent pins, cracks, or signs of wear on the port itself. Minor damage can prevent proper connection.
  2. Software Restart & Updates:

    • Vehicle Restart: Perform a full vehicle restart (via infotainment or button sequence, refer to manual). This can resolve temporary software glitches affecting charging control.
    • Check for Updates: Ensure your R1T's software is up to date. Rivian frequently releases updates addressing system bugs, including charging-related ones.
  3. Cable and Charger Verification:

    • You've already tried different cables and chargers, which is excellent troubleshooting. This helps rule out external equipment.

Potential Causes:

  • Charging Port Sensor/Actuator Failure: The latching mechanism is controlled by a sensor and an actuator. Failure here prevents proper latching.
  • Charging Control Module (CCM) Issue: The CCM manages the charging process. A fault could lead to slow charging or communication issues.
  • Wiring Harness Damage: Less common, but internal wiring damage to the charging port or its connection to the CCM could cause intermittent problems.

Diagnostics & When to See a Shop: Your Rivian's onboard diagnostic system will log specific fault codes related to charging system anomalies. While standard OBD-II readers might not access all proprietary Rivian codes, a service center can. For example, issues with the high-voltage battery system or charging components might trigger codes in the P0Axx range.

If, after inspecting the port and performing a software restart, the issue persists, it's highly recommended to schedule a service appointment with Rivian. Given that it affects both latching and charging speed, it's likely an internal vehicle component that requires professional diagnosis and repair. Continuing to force a connection could potentially damage the port further.
