Vehicle: 2023 Rivian R1T Adventure

Hey everyone, I've been having a weird issue with my 2023 Rivian R1T Adventure. Lately, when I plug it in at home or at a public charger, the charging port often doesn't lock properly. I get a message on the dash saying 'Charging Port Not Secured.' Sometimes it eventually locks after a few tries, but other times it just won't.

Even when it does lock, I've noticed my charging speeds seem slower than usual. I'm using the Rivian Wall Charger at home, and I've tried different public Level 2 chargers too, with similar results. I've checked the port for debris, and it looks clean. Has anyone else experienced this with their R1T? It's getting pretty frustrating.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

  • Causes for Charging Port Issues & Slow Charging:

    1. Software Glitch: The vehicle's software or the charging control module might be experiencing a temporary bug preventing proper communication or actuator function.
    2. Physical Obstruction/Damage: Even small debris, dust, or minor damage to the charging port pins or the locking mechanism can interfere with the connection and locking.
    3. Faulty Locking Actuator/Sensor: The electromechanical actuator responsible for locking the charging cable might be failing, or its associated sensor isn't reporting correctly.
    4. Charging Cable/EVSE Issue: While you've tried different chargers, a specific cable or even the Rivian Wall Charger itself could have an intermittent fault.
    5. Internal Charging System Fault: An issue within the R1T's onboard charging system could be limiting power intake.
  • Troubleshooting Steps:

    1. Soft Reset: Try performing a soft reset of your R1T. This often resolves minor software glitches. Consult your owner's manual for the exact procedure (usually involves holding down steering wheel buttons).
    2. Thorough Port Inspection: Use a flashlight to carefully inspect the charging port for any dust, lint, bent pins, or foreign objects that might be preventing a secure connection or the lock from engaging. Use compressed air if needed, but avoid inserting anything metal.
    3. Update Software: Ensure your R1T's software is fully up to date. Rivian frequently releases updates that address various system bugs, including charging-related ones. Check for updates via your vehicle's infotainment system or the Rivian app.
    4. Try a Different Cable/Charger: If possible, try a different charging cable with your Rivian Wall Charger, or try charging at another reliable public Level 2 station to rule out your specific home setup or cable.
    5. Check Rivian App Alerts: Open your Rivian app and check for any diagnostic alerts or messages related to charging or the electrical system. Rivian's system often provides more specific codes or descriptions than generic OBD-II scanners. While a standard OBD-II code like P0D27 (EVSE Communication Error) might appear in some systems, Rivian's internal diagnostics are usually more detailed.
  • When to See a Shop: If the issue persists after performing these troubleshooting steps, especially if the charging port consistently fails to lock or if charging speeds remain significantly reduced, it's time to schedule a service appointment. This indicates a potential hardware failure with the charging port assembly, its locking mechanism, or an internal component of the vehicle's charging system. You can easily schedule service through your Rivian app. Provide them with a detailed description of the symptoms and any troubleshooting you've already performed.
