Vehicle: 2023 Rivian R1T Quad-Motor

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for some advice on my 2023 Rivian R1T. This morning, while driving to work, I suddenly got a 'Drivetrain Malfunction' warning light on the dash. Immediately after, I noticed a significant reduction in power, almost like it went into a limp mode. The truck felt sluggish and wouldn't accelerate properly.

I pulled over, turned the vehicle off, waited a few minutes, and turned it back on, but the warning persisted, and the power reduction was still there. There weren't any strange noises or smells before this happened, it was very sudden. The battery was at about 70% charge.

Has anyone experienced something similar with their R1T? What could be causing this, and is it safe to drive to a service center, or should I get it towed? Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Experiencing a 'Drivetrain Malfunction' warning along with reduced power in your 2023 Rivian R1T is a serious issue that requires immediate attention. This indicates a problem within the high-voltage propulsion system. Here's what you should know:

  1. Do Not Ignore the Warning: When your Rivian enters a reduced power or 'limp mode,' it's a protective measure to prevent further damage. Continuing to drive extensively could exacerbate the problem.
  2. Potential Causes:
    • Motor or Inverter Issues: Problems with one or more of the electric drive motors or their associated inverters (which convert DC battery power to AC for the motors) are common culprits for drivetrain warnings. This could be due to sensor failures, overheating, or internal component faults.
    • Battery Management System (BMS) Fault: While your battery showed 70% charge, a fault within the BMS could incorrectly report battery health or restrict power output to protect the pack.
    • High-Voltage System Glitch: Issues with contactors, wiring, or other components within the high-voltage system can trigger these warnings.
    • Software Glitch: Less common for a persistent issue, but sometimes a software bug can cause erroneous warnings. However, given the reduced power, a hardware issue is more likely.
    • Thermal Management: Overheating of motors or inverters can lead to power reduction.
  3. Common OBD Codes: While Rivian's diagnostic systems are proprietary, a generic OBD-II scanner might show codes related to the high-voltage system, such as:
    • P0A00-P0A0F: Motor Electronics Coolant Temperature Sensor Circuit issues.
    • P0A1A-P0A1F: Drive Motor 'A' Control Module performance issues.
    • P0A78/P0A79: Drive Motor 'A' or 'B' Inverter Performance.

When to See a Shop:

Given the reduced power and persistent warning, it is highly recommended to have your Rivian towed to a certified Rivian service center immediately. Do not attempt to drive it long distances. High-voltage systems require specialized tools and training to diagnose and repair safely. A service technician will be able to perform a full diagnostic scan, pinpoint the exact fault, and carry out the necessary repairs to restore your R1T's performance and safety.
