Vehicle: 2023 Rivian R1T Launch Edition

Hey everyone,

I've been having some frustrating issues with charging my 2023 Rivian R1T Launch Edition lately. Whether I'm using my home Level 2 charger (Rivian Wall Charger) or a public DC fast charger, the charging session often either stops prematurely or charges at an incredibly slow rate, much lower than expected. Sometimes it'll just stop after 10-15 minutes, even if the battery isn't full.

At home, I've tried resetting the wall charger and checking the circuit breaker, but the problem persists. On DCFC, it's even more concerning because I'm paying by the minute or kWh, and it's just not delivering. I've checked the charging cable for any visible damage, and everything looks fine. Has anyone else experienced this with their R1T, especially a 2023 model? It's making longer trips a real headache.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Experiencing inconsistent or slow charging with your Rivian R1T can be concerning, as it points to potential issues within the vehicle's electrical system or charging infrastructure. Here are some steps and potential causes to investigate:

  1. Inspect Charging Equipment:

    • Cables and Connectors: Thoroughly inspect both your Rivian Wall Charger cable and any public charging cables you use for signs of wear, fraying, bent pins, or corrosion. Even minor damage can disrupt communication or power flow.
    • Wall Charger/Outlet: Ensure your home charger is properly installed and receiving full power. Test with another EV if possible, or try a different Level 2 charger if available.
  2. Vehicle Software and Settings:

    • Software Updates: Ensure your R1T's software is fully up to date. Rivian frequently releases updates that can address charging performance and battery management issues. Check your vehicle's settings for pending updates.
    • Charging Schedules/Limits: Double-check your R1T's charging settings to ensure no scheduled charging times or charge limits (e.g., stopping at 80%) are inadvertently causing the interruptions.
    • Battery Preconditioning: For DC fast charging, ensure your vehicle has enough time to precondition the battery, especially in colder weather. Driving to the charger with navigation active helps the vehicle prepare the battery for optimal charging speeds.
  3. Environmental Factors:

    • Temperature: Extreme ambient temperatures (very hot or very cold) can affect battery charging efficiency and cause the Battery Management System (BMS) to reduce charging speeds to protect the battery.
  4. Diagnostics (Potential OBD Codes): If the issue is internal to the vehicle, your R1T's onboard diagnostics might log specific codes. While Rivian's system is proprietary, common EV-related codes that could indicate a problem include:

    • P0AA6: Hybrid Battery Voltage System Isolation Fault (indicates a potential issue with the high-voltage system's insulation).
    • P0D27: DC Charging System Malfunction (a general code for issues with the DC fast charging circuit).
    • P0D26: AC Charging System Malfunction (similar to P0D27 but for AC charging). These codes would typically require a Rivian service technician to properly diagnose.

When to See a Shop: If you've checked your charging equipment, confirmed software is updated, and adjusted vehicle settings without success, it's time to contact Rivian Service. Persistent charging issues can indicate a problem with the vehicle's onboard charger, battery management system (BMS), high-voltage contactors, or even the battery pack itself. Provide them with detailed information about when and where the issues occur (home L2, public DCFC, specific chargers) to aid in diagnosis.
