Vehicle: 2023 Rivian R1T Launch Edition

Hey everyone,

I'm having a really frustrating issue with my 2023 Rivian R1T Launch Edition. For the past week, it's been very inconsistent with charging. Sometimes it charges fine, but more often than not, it either charges extremely slowly or stops charging altogether, throwing a 'Charging System Fault' message on the dash and in the app.

I've tried charging at my home Level 2 charger (which worked perfectly for months) and also at several public DC fast chargers and Level 2 stations. The problem persists across all of them. I've checked the charging cable for damage, and it looks fine. I've also tried restarting the infotainment system, but that hasn't helped.

Has anyone else experienced this with their R1T? Could it be a software bug, or something more serious with the onboard charger or battery system? Any advice would be greatly appreciated before I schedule a service appointment.

Experiencing inconsistent charging and 'Charging System Fault' errors on your Rivian R1T can be concerning, especially when it occurs across multiple charging sources. This issue typically points to a problem within the vehicle's charging system rather than the external charging equipment.

Here are some potential causes and troubleshooting steps:

  1. Onboard Charger (OBC) Malfunction: The OBC is responsible for converting AC power from Level 1/2 chargers into DC power for the battery. A fault here can prevent or limit charging.
  2. Battery Management System (BMS) Issue: The BMS monitors battery health, temperature, and charging parameters. If it detects an anomaly, it can halt charging to protect the battery.
  3. Charging Port or Cable Sensor Fault: While you've checked the cable, a sensor within the vehicle's charging port or a communication issue between the vehicle and the charger could be triggering the fault.
  4. Software Glitch: Less common for persistent hardware-related errors, but a software bug could misinterpret charging conditions. Ensure your Rivian's software is up to date.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  • Perform a Soft Reset: Try a soft reset of your vehicle's systems (refer to your owner's manual for the exact procedure, often involves holding down steering wheel buttons). This can sometimes clear temporary electronic glitches.
  • Inspect Charging Port: Carefully inspect the vehicle's charging port for any debris, bent pins, or corrosion that might interfere with the connection.
  • Check Rivian App: Look for more specific diagnostic messages or error codes within the Rivian mobile app, as it sometimes provides more detail than the dash display.

When to See a Shop:

Given that the issue is consistent across various charging stations and you're receiving a 'Charging System Fault,' it's highly recommended to schedule a service appointment with Rivian. This type of error often requires specialized diagnostic tools to pinpoint the exact component causing the problem, whether it's the OBC, BMS, or a related sensor. Continuing to use a faulty charging system could potentially lead to further issues or inefficient charging. Since your vehicle is a 2023 model, it should still be well within its warranty period for such repairs.
