Vehicle: 2023 Rivian R1T Adventure

My 2023 Rivian R1T, a Quad-Motor Adventure trim, recently went into a reduced power mode while I was driving on the highway. The "Check Engine" light came on, along with a warning message on the dash about "Reduced Performance." It felt like the truck lost significant acceleration capability.

I pulled over safely and tried restarting the vehicle, but the warning persisted. I used my OBD-II scanner and pulled a P0AFA code, which seems to point to a Hybrid/EV Battery System Voltage Low issue.

Has anyone else experienced this with their R1T? What could be causing this, and is it safe to drive short distances to a service center, or should I get it towed? I'm a bit concerned as the truck is relatively new.

  1. Immediate Actions & Safety: The P0AFA code, indicating "Hybrid/EV Battery System Voltage Low," is a critical fault in an electric vehicle. When your 2023 Rivian R1T enters reduced power mode, it's a safety mechanism to prevent further damage to the high-voltage system.
    • Do not drive long distances. If the warning persists, it's generally not safe to drive, especially at highway speeds. Driving with this code could exacerbate the underlying issue or lead to a complete power loss.
    • Contact Rivian Service: Your best course of action is to contact Rivian Roadside Assistance immediately. They can arrange for a tow to the nearest authorized Rivian service center.
  2. Potential Causes for P0AFA: This code can stem from several issues within the high-voltage battery system:
    • Battery Cell Imbalance/Degradation: Individual battery cells or modules might be failing or significantly out of balance, leading to a perceived low voltage across the pack.
    • Battery Management System (BMS) Fault: The BMS, which monitors and controls the battery pack, could be malfunctioning, providing incorrect readings or failing to manage cell voltage properly.
    • High-Voltage Contactor Issues: Contactors are switches that connect and disconnect the battery from the rest of the high-voltage system. A faulty contactor could cause intermittent or low voltage.
    • Wiring or Connector Problems: Loose, corroded, or damaged wiring and connectors within the high-voltage system can disrupt voltage flow.
  3. When to See a Shop: You should see a Rivian authorized service center as soon as possible. Given the complexity and high voltage involved, this is not a DIY repair. Specialized diagnostic tools and safety protocols are required to properly diagnose and repair issues within the Rivian's high-voltage battery system. Since your R1T is a 2023 model, it should still be under warranty, covering this type of repair.
