Vehicle: 2023 Rivian R1T

Hey everyone, hoping someone can shed some light on an issue I'm having with my 2023 Rivian R1T. This morning, while driving to work, I suddenly got a 'Reduced Power' message on the screen, along with the service light illuminating. The truck felt noticeably sluggish, almost like it was in a limp mode.

I pulled over, turned it off, and back on, but the message reappeared. The truck is still driveable, but it's definitely not performing normally. I don't have an OBD-II scanner that works with EVs handy, and I'm not sure if a standard one would even pull Rivian-specific codes.

Has anyone experienced this with their 2023 R1T or R1S? What was the cause, and what should I check before calling service? Any advice on common diagnostic codes for this type of issue would be greatly appreciated.

Experiencing a 'Reduced Power' message on your 2023 Rivian R1T is a serious indication that the vehicle's powertrain control module (PCM) has detected a critical fault. While it can be alarming, there are a few steps you can take and common causes to consider.

  1. Initial Checks & Troubleshooting:

    • Safely Pull Over: If you haven't already, ensure you are in a safe location. Do not continue driving if the vehicle feels unsafe or if the power reduction is severe.
    • Attempt a Soft Reset: Sometimes, a temporary software glitch can trigger these warnings. Try performing a soft reset by holding down both scroll wheels on the steering wheel until the main display reboots. Wait a few minutes after the reboot to see if the message clears.
    • Check Charging Port: Ensure there's no debris or moisture in your charging port that might be causing a sensor error, although this is less common for 'Reduced Power' during driving.
  2. Potential Causes for 'Reduced Power' in EVs:

    • Software Glitch: As with many modern, highly computerized vehicles, a temporary software bug can sometimes cause false positives. The soft reset mentioned above can sometimes resolve these.
    • High-Voltage Battery System Fault: This is a common culprit. Issues can range from a failing battery cell, a contactor malfunction, or problems with the Battery Management System (BMS) sensors. These often trigger specific manufacturer codes (e.g., in the P0Axx range for EV powertrain issues, like a P0A15 - Drive Motor A Inverter Performance).
    • Drive Unit (Motor/Inverter) Malfunction: Problems with one of the electric motors or its associated inverter can lead to reduced power. This could be due to overheating, a sensor failure, or an internal component issue.
    • Accessory 12V Battery Issue: While less direct, a failing 12V auxiliary battery can cause a cascade of seemingly unrelated electrical errors, as it powers many control modules. If this battery is low or failing, it can disrupt communication and lead to erroneous warnings.
    • Thermal Management System: Overheating of the battery or drive units can force the vehicle into a reduced power mode to prevent damage.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • Immediate Service Call: If the 'Reduced Power' message persists after a soft reset, or if the vehicle is undriveable, making unusual noises, or feels unsafe, you should contact Rivian service immediately. Do not attempt to diagnose or repair high-voltage systems yourself, as this poses a serious electrical shock hazard.
    • Professional Diagnosis: Rivian service centers have specialized diagnostic tools that can read proprietary fault codes specific to your R1T's high-voltage systems. These codes will pinpoint the exact subsystem or component that is causing the issue. They can then perform the necessary repairs safely and effectively.
