Vehicle: 2023 Rivian R1T Adventure

Hey everyone,

I'm having a pretty concerning issue with my 2023 Rivian R1T Adventure trim. Yesterday, while driving on the highway, I suddenly got a 'Reduced Power' warning on the dash, and the Check Engine Light (CEL) came on. The truck immediately felt sluggish and wouldn't accelerate normally.

I pulled over and used my OBD-II scanner, which showed a P0A7A code: 'Drive Motor A Inverter Performance'. I tried clearing the code, but it came back almost immediately after restarting the vehicle and driving a short distance. The reduced power mode persists.

Has anyone else experienced this specific code or a similar reduced power issue with their R1T? I'm trying to figure out if this is something I can troubleshoot myself or if it's an immediate trip to the service center. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The P0A7A code, 'Drive Motor A Inverter Performance,' indicates that the vehicle's powertrain control module (PCM) has detected an issue with the performance or operation of the inverter for drive motor 'A.' In Rivian's case, 'Drive Motor A' typically refers to one of the primary drive motors, often the front or rear primary motor, depending on the specific architecture and what the system designates as 'A.' This is a critical code as the inverter is responsible for converting DC power from the battery into AC power to drive the electric motors.

Here are some steps and considerations:

  1. Initial Checks: While this code often points to internal component failure, you can visually inspect the high-voltage cabling and connectors leading to the inverter and motor for any obvious signs of damage, corrosion, or loose connections. Ensure the 12V battery is in good health, as a weak 12V battery can sometimes cause various electrical gremlins, though less likely to directly trigger P0A7A.
  2. Potential Causes: The most common causes for a P0A7A code include a faulty drive motor inverter module, issues with the electric drive motor itself (though less common for 'performance' codes), problems with the wiring harness or connectors between the inverter and motor/battery, or potentially a software glitch requiring an update. Sensor failures within the inverter or motor assembly (e.g., temperature sensors, current sensors) can also trigger this code if they report incorrect data.
  3. Diagnostic Tools: A generic OBD-II scanner can read the code, but a Rivian-specific diagnostic tool would be necessary to delve deeper into inverter and motor sensor data, perform active tests, and check for related manufacturer-specific codes that might provide more context.

When to See a Shop:

Given that the vehicle is in 'Reduced Power' mode and the code relates to a critical high-voltage powertrain component, it is strongly recommended to have your 2023 Rivian R1T inspected by a certified Rivian service center as soon as possible. Driving with this condition could potentially lead to further damage to the inverter or motor, or leave you stranded. High-voltage systems require specialized training and equipment for diagnosis and repair, and attempting to troubleshoot these components without proper knowledge and safety precautions can be extremely dangerous. The vehicle's safety systems are likely limiting power to prevent further damage or unsafe operation.
