Vehicle: 2023 Rivian R1T Launch Edition

Hey everyone,

I'm experiencing a concerning issue with my 2023 Rivian R1T Launch Edition. Yesterday, while driving, I suddenly got a 'Service Vehicle Soon' message pop up on the screen. Almost immediately after, I noticed a significant reduction in power, and the truck felt sluggish, almost like it was in a 'limp home' mode.

I tried pulling over, turning it off and on again, but the message persists, and the power is still limited. I haven't had any recent software updates that I'm aware of, and it wasn't charging when this happened. Has anyone else encountered this with their R1T? What could be causing this, and is it safe to drive to a service center, or should I call for a tow?

Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Experiencing a 'Service Vehicle Soon' message combined with reduced power in your 2023 Rivian R1T is a critical issue that requires immediate attention. This usually indicates a fault within the vehicle's propulsion or high-voltage (HV) system. Here's what you should consider:

  1. Do Not Ignore Warnings: A 'Service Vehicle Soon' message, especially when accompanied by reduced power, means the vehicle's onboard diagnostics have detected a significant problem. Continuing to drive could potentially worsen the issue or lead to a complete breakdown.

  2. Potential Causes: While Rivian vehicles have sophisticated diagnostic systems, common causes for such symptoms can include:

    • High Voltage (HV) System Fault: Issues with the battery management system (BMS), HV contactors, or other components within the high-voltage battery or motor system.
    • Propulsion System Component Failure: A fault in one of the electric motors, inverters, or associated sensors.
    • 12V Battery Issues: Although less common for reduced power, a failing 12V battery can sometimes cause a cascade of electronic errors, including false warnings.
    • Specific Sensor Malfunction: A critical sensor (e.g., temperature, current, voltage) providing incorrect readings can trigger a protective 'limp home' mode.
  3. OBD-II Codes: While Rivian uses proprietary diagnostic codes that are best read by their specialized tools, a generic OBD-II scanner might reveal a P-code related to the powertrain (e.g., P0AXX, P0BXX, P0CXX series for hybrid/EV systems). However, these generic codes often only point to a general area, and Rivian's internal diagnostics will provide much more specific information.

  4. When to See a Shop: Given the reduced power and 'Service Vehicle Soon' warning, it is strongly recommended to contact Rivian Service directly. They can often perform remote diagnostics and advise on the safest course of action. It is generally not advisable to drive the vehicle if power is significantly limited, as this could indicate a safety-critical fault. Arrange for a tow to the nearest Rivian Service Center. They have the specialized equipment and training to accurately diagnose and repair high-voltage system issues.
