Vehicle: 2023 Rivian R1T Adventure

My 2023 Rivian R1T Adventure started acting weird this morning. While driving on the highway, I suddenly felt a significant loss of power, and the truck went into what felt like a limp mode. The "Check EV System" light came on, and acceleration was severely limited.

I pulled over, turned it off and on again, but the issue persists. It's barely able to get up to speed. I'm worried about driving it like this.

Has anyone experienced this with their R1T? What could be causing this sudden power reduction?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Experiencing a sudden loss of power and entering limp mode in your Rivian R1T is a serious concern that indicates a critical issue within the high-voltage powertrain system. It's designed to protect the vehicle and occupants by limiting performance when a fault is detected.

Common Causes:

  1. Motor or Inverter Fault: One of the electric motors or its associated inverter (which converts DC battery power to AC for the motor) could be malfunctioning. This can range from sensor issues to internal component failures.
  2. High Voltage (HV) Battery System Issue: Problems with the battery management system (BMS), a faulty cell module, or issues with HV contactors can trigger a power reduction. The system might detect an imbalance or an unsafe condition.
  3. Cooling System Failure: Overheating in the motors, inverters, or battery can force the system into limp mode to prevent damage.
  4. Software Glitch: Less common for critical power loss, but a severe software error in the powertrain control module could potentially cause this.

Diagnostics:

When a "Check EV System" light comes on with reduced power, common diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) might include:

  • P0A0F: High Voltage System Interlock Circuit Performance
  • P0AA6: Hybrid Battery Voltage System Isolation Fault
  • P0D26: Drive Motor 'A' Control Module Performance

When to See a Shop:

  1. Immediate Action: Do not continue to drive the vehicle if it's in limp mode and displaying a "Check EV System" light. Driving with a powertrain fault can lead to further damage or even unsafe operating conditions.
  2. Contact Rivian Service: This issue requires immediate professional diagnosis. Contact Rivian Service directly to arrange for towing to the nearest service center. They have specialized diagnostic tools and expertise for high-voltage EV systems.
  3. Safety First: Ensure the vehicle is parked safely. If you notice any smoke, burning smells, or unusual sounds from the battery area, move away from the vehicle and contact emergency services immediately.
