Vehicle: 2024 Rivian R1S Adventure

Hey everyone,

My 2024 Rivian R1S Adventure just threw a curveball at me. While driving on the highway yesterday, I suddenly got a 'Reduced Power' warning on the dash, along with a few other system alerts. The vehicle immediately felt sluggish, like it was in a limp home mode, and I couldn't accelerate past about 40 mph.

I pulled over, turned it off, and restarted it, but the warnings persisted, and the power reduction was still there. I managed to get it home, but I'm really concerned. It's a brand new truck, and I wasn't doing anything unusual.

Has anyone experienced anything similar with their R1S or R1T? What could be causing this, and is there anything I can check myself before calling service?

A 'Reduced Power' warning in your 2024 Rivian R1S, especially when accompanied by other system alerts, indicates a critical issue within the vehicle's high-voltage system or one of its drive units. The vehicle's computer is designed to enter a 'limp home' mode to protect components from further damage and allow you to safely reach a service center.

Common Causes for Reduced Power Mode in EVs:

  • Drive Unit Fault: One of the electric motors (drive units) could be experiencing an internal fault, overheating, or a sensor issue.
  • High Voltage Battery System Issue: Problems with the battery management system (BMS), a cell imbalance, or a fault within the high-voltage battery pack itself.
  • Inverter/Converter Malfunction: The components responsible for converting DC power from the battery to AC power for the motors, or managing charging, can fail.
  • Cooling System Malfunction: Overheating of the battery or drive units due to a fault in the thermal management system can trigger power reduction.
  • Software Glitch: Less common, but a temporary software error could sometimes trigger false warnings.

When to See a Shop: This type of warning is serious and requires immediate professional attention.

  1. Do Not Ignore: Continuing to drive with a 'Reduced Power' warning can potentially exacerbate the issue or lead to a complete breakdown.
  2. Contact Rivian Service: Your first step should be to contact Rivian service directly. They have specialized diagnostic tools and expertise for their vehicles. Provide them with as much detail as possible about when and how the warning appeared.
  3. Diagnostic Codes: While Rivian vehicles don't typically display standard OBD-II codes for these types of high-voltage faults to the user, the internal diagnostic system will have logged specific manufacturer codes that Rivian technicians can retrieve. These codes are crucial for pinpointing the exact problem.
  4. Towing: If the vehicle is severely limited in power or you feel unsafe driving it, arrange for a tow to the nearest Rivian service center. Do not attempt long-distance driving in limp mode.

It's best to let Rivian's trained technicians diagnose and repair this issue to ensure the safety and longevity of your vehicle.
