Vehicle: 2024 Rivian R1T Quad-Motor

Hi everyone,

I'm having some serious issues with the main infotainment screen in my brand new 2024 Rivian R1T Quad-Motor. It's only a few months old, and already the screen is freezing up randomly. Sometimes it's just a momentary freeze, but other times it completely blacks out for several minutes, making it impossible to control climate, navigation, or even see my speed.

It usually happens when I'm navigating or switching between different apps. A soft reset (holding down the steering wheel buttons) sometimes brings it back, but it's not a reliable fix. This is really concerning for a vehicle this new and at this price point. It feels like a software or hardware glitch with the display unit itself.

Has anyone else with a newer R1T experienced this? Is there a recent software update that might address this, or am I looking at a hardware replacement?

Infotainment screen issues like freezing and blackouts can be incredibly disruptive, especially in modern vehicles where so many functions are integrated into the display. For a new 2024 Rivian, this is definitely something that needs to be addressed.

Possible Causes:

  1. Software Bug: This is a very common cause for infotainment issues. A bug in the operating system or an application can lead to instability, freezing, or crashes, resulting in a blank screen.
  2. Module Malfunction: The infotainment system is controlled by dedicated electronic control units (ECUs) or modules. A fault within one of these modules (e.g., the main processing unit, graphics processor, or display controller) can cause erratic behavior.
  3. Connectivity Issues: Problems with internal wiring harnesses or connectors between the display and its control module can lead to intermittent signal loss and a blank screen.
  4. Overheating: While less common in a new vehicle, prolonged heavy use or environmental factors could theoretically cause a module to overheat and temporarily malfunction.
  5. Corrupted Data: Rarely, corrupted system files or cached data can cause instability.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Perform a Hard Reset: If a soft reset isn't fully effective, try a more comprehensive system reset if available (consult your owner's manual or Rivian service for instructions).
  2. Check for Software Updates: Ensure your Rivian's software is fully up to date. Rivian frequently releases over-the-air (OTA) updates that address bugs and improve system stability.
  3. Note Conditions: Pay attention to when the issue occurs. Does it happen with a specific app open? After a certain amount of driving? In particular weather conditions? This information can be helpful for diagnostics.

When to See a Shop:

  • If the problem persists after ensuring all software updates are installed.
  • If the screen blackouts become more frequent, longer, or completely prevent use of essential vehicle functions.
  • If a hard reset does not resolve the issue.
  • If the issue affects safety-critical information (e.g., speedometer, warning lights).

While there are rarely standard OBD codes for infotainment screen glitches, Rivian's diagnostic tools can access internal system logs that will likely show error entries related to the display module or software crashes. A service center will be able to diagnose whether it's a software issue requiring a reflash or a hardware issue necessitating a module replacement.
