Vehicle: 2024 Rivian R1T

Hey everyone,

I'm having a really frustrating issue with my 2024 Rivian R1T. For the past week, I've woken up twice to a completely dead 12V battery. The truck is totally unresponsive, and I have to jump it to get anything to happen. Once it's jumped, everything seems fine, but it's a huge hassle.

I've made sure nothing is left plugged in overnight, and I haven't installed any new accessories recently. It's a standard R1T, no special trim. Has anyone else experienced this with their Rivian, especially newer models? Could it be a software glitch or a faulty 12V battery already?

Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated before I schedule a service appointment. Thanks!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Experiencing a dead 12V battery in an EV like your 2024 Rivian R1T can be quite alarming, as the 12V system is crucial for powering the vehicle's computers, accessories, and initiating the high-voltage battery contactors. While the main traction battery powers the drivetrain, the 12V battery is the 'starter' for the entire system.

Here are some steps and potential causes to consider:

  1. Check for Parasitic Drain: Even with nothing visibly left on, a module or accessory could be drawing power. Ensure all doors, the frunk, and tailgate are fully closed. Check if any aftermarket dash cams or chargers are hardwired and not properly shutting off.
  2. Recent Software Updates: Sometimes, a recent over-the-air (OTA) software update can introduce bugs that prevent modules from entering a low-power sleep state, leading to excessive 12V drain. Check your Rivian app for any pending updates or recent update history.
  3. Faulty 12V Battery: It's possible, though less common in newer vehicles, that the 12V battery itself is defective and not holding a charge. This can be tested by a professional with a battery load tester.
  4. Charging System Issue: The 12V battery in an EV is recharged by the high-voltage system via a DC-DC converter. If this converter is malfunctioning, the 12V battery won't be properly maintained. This would likely trigger a diagnostic trouble code (DTC).
  5. Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): If you have access to an OBD-II scanner that can read Rivian-specific codes, look for codes related to power management, low voltage, or specific module faults. Common generic codes might include P0562 (System Voltage Low) or U0100 (Lost Communication with ECM/PCM A), though Rivian will have more specific internal codes.

When to See a Shop:

If the issue persists after checking for obvious parasitic drains and ensuring no recent software anomalies, it's highly recommended to schedule service with Rivian. A technician can perform a comprehensive diagnostic check, including a battery health test, parasitic draw test, and verify the operation of the DC-DC converter and all relevant control modules. Given it's a new vehicle, this issue should be covered under warranty.
