Vehicle: 2025 Rivian R1T Quad-Motor

I'm experiencing a really concerning issue with my 2025 Rivian R1T. Lately, I've been getting a whole Christmas tree of warning lights on the dash – 'ABS Fault,' 'Traction Control Off,' 'Service Vehicle Soon,' and sometimes even a 'Brake System Malfunction.' On top of that, I've had a few instances of intermittent power loss, where the vehicle feels like it briefly cuts out, and there's a distinct clicking sound coming from under the dash or hood area.

These symptoms are sporadic but seem to be getting more frequent. The truck has about 3,000 miles on it, so it's practically brand new. I'm really stumped and worried this could be something major. It almost feels like an electrical ghost in the machine.

Has anyone encountered such a wide array of seemingly unrelated warnings and power issues on their Rivian? What should I be looking for or asking the service center to check?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The combination of multiple warning lights, intermittent power loss, and clicking sounds in your 2025 Rivian R1T strongly suggests a fundamental electrical system issue, potentially related to the 12V system or the vehicle's communication network.

Possible Causes:

  1. Failing 12V Battery: A weak or failing 12V auxiliary battery is a prime suspect for a cascade of seemingly unrelated electrical issues in modern EVs. It can cause various control modules (ABS, Traction Control, Body Control Module) to receive insufficient voltage, leading to erroneous fault codes and system malfunctions. The clicking sound could be a relay struggling due to low voltage.
  2. Loose or Corroded Electrical Connections: A poor connection at the 12V battery terminals, ground points, or even within critical wiring harnesses can disrupt power and communication to multiple systems, leading to intermittent faults.
  3. CAN Bus Communication Errors: The Controller Area Network (CAN bus) is the vehicle's central communication system. If there's a fault on the CAN bus (e.g., a short, open circuit, or faulty module disrupting communication), various modules can lose contact, triggering multiple warning lights (e.g., U0100 - Lost Communication with ECM/PCM A, or U0121 - Lost Communication with Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Control Module).
  4. Faulty Main Contactor/Relay: The clicking sound and intermittent power loss could indicate a problem with a main high-voltage contactor or a critical relay that is failing to make consistent contact, momentarily cutting power.
  5. Faulty Body Control Module (BCM) or Gateway Module: These modules manage a vast array of vehicle functions and communications. A fault within one of these could manifest as widespread electrical issues.

Recommended Steps:

  1. Do Not Ignore: This is not a minor issue. Intermittent power loss and brake/traction control warnings are safety-critical. Avoid driving the vehicle if possible.
  2. Check 12V Battery Terminals: If you're comfortable, visually inspect the 12V battery terminals for looseness or corrosion. Ensure they are clean and tight. (Note: The 12V battery is often located under the frunk or in a less accessible area in Rivians).
  3. Note Specifics: Keep a detailed log of when the warnings appear, what other systems are affected, and the exact nature of the clicking sound. This information will be invaluable to the technicians.

When to See a Shop:

Immediately. The combination of multiple safety-critical warnings and intermittent power loss necessitates professional diagnosis. This is not a DIY fix. Contact Rivian Service to arrange for a tow and a thorough inspection. They have the specialized diagnostic tools to read all relevant fault codes and trace the root cause of such complex electrical issues. Do not attempt to drive the vehicle if you are experiencing power loss or brake system warnings.
