Vehicle: 2022 Rivian R1T Launch Edition

I'm experiencing a recurring "Charge Fault" message on my 2022 Rivian R1T Launch Edition. This happens both at home on my Level 2 charger and sometimes at public DC fast chargers. When it doesn't fault, the charging speed is significantly slower than usual, often taking twice as long to gain a decent charge.

I've checked the charging cables and tried different outlets, but the issue persists. Could this be an internal vehicle problem rather than the charger itself?

  1. Identify the Source: The "Charge Fault" message can originate from the vehicle, the charging station, or the cable. Since it happens with multiple chargers, it points more towards the vehicle.
  2. Common Vehicle-Side Causes:
    • Onboard Charger (OBC) Malfunction: The OBC converts AC power from Level 2 chargers to DC for the battery. A fault here can prevent or slow charging.
    • Battery Management System (BMS) Communication Issues: The BMS monitors battery health and communicates with the charger. Any disruption can trigger a fault.
    • Charging Port Issues: Physical damage, corrosion, or a loose connection within the vehicle's charging port can cause intermittent faults.
    • High Voltage System Faults: Broader issues within the high-voltage battery system can manifest as charging problems.
  3. Diagnostic Codes: Professional diagnosis is crucial. A Rivian service center can read specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to the charging system. Look for:
    • P0Dxx: Codes specifically related to the charging system (e.g., P0D01 - Charge Connector Interlock Circuit Low).
    • P0Axx / P0Bxx: High voltage battery system codes.
    • U0xxx: Communication errors between modules (e.g., U0111 - Lost Communication with Battery Energy Control Module).
  4. Troubleshooting Steps (User):
    • Ensure the charging cable is fully inserted and locked into the vehicle's port.
    • Try a different charging cable if possible.
    • Perform a vehicle soft reset (refer to your owner's manual).
  5. When to See a Shop: A recurring "Charge Fault" is a critical issue that requires immediate attention from Rivian Service. Driving with a compromised charging system could lead to further damage or leave you stranded. They have the specialized tools to diagnose the OBC, BMS, and high-voltage system components safely and accurately.
