Vehicle: 2023 Rivian R1T Adventure

Hey everyone, I've got a 2023 Rivian R1T Adventure and I'm thinking about tackling the cabin air filter replacement myself. The service center quoted me a pretty penny, and I'm usually pretty handy. Has anyone here done this on their R1T or R1S?

Where is it located exactly? I've poked around a bit but haven't found an obvious access panel like in some other vehicles. Are there any special tools needed, or is it a straightforward job with basic tools?

Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated before I dive in. I want to make sure I don't break any clips or panels. Thanks in advance for the help!

Replacing the cabin air filter in your Rivian R1T is a manageable DIY task that can save you money and improve your vehicle's interior air quality. Here's a general guide:

  1. Gather Your Tools and Parts: You'll typically need a new cabin air filter (ensure it's the correct one for your Rivian R1T), a small flathead screwdriver or trim removal tool, and possibly a Torx T20 driver, depending on the specific model year and trim.
  2. Locate the Filter Housing: The cabin air filter in Rivian R1T and R1S models is generally located behind the glove box or in the passenger footwell area. You might need to remove a lower trim panel or the glove box itself to gain access.
  3. Access the Filter:
    • Carefully open the glove box. Look for clips or screws that secure the lower panel beneath the glove box or the glove box itself. Use your trim removal tool to gently pry off any plastic covers or panels.
    • Once the panel is removed, you should see a rectangular housing, often with clips or small screws securing its cover. Unclip or unscrew the cover.
  4. Replace the Filter: Note the direction of the airflow arrow on the old filter before removing it. This is crucial for proper installation of the new filter. Slide out the old filter, dispose of it, and insert the new filter, ensuring the airflow arrow points in the correct direction (usually towards the rear of the vehicle).
  5. Reassemble: Secure the housing cover, reattach any trim panels or the glove box, and ensure all clips and screws are properly fastened.

Causes of a Dirty Filter: Over time, cabin air filters accumulate dust, pollen, leaves, and other airborne particles, reducing airflow and potentially causing odors.

When to See a Shop:

  • If you encounter unexpected resistance or difficulty removing panels, or if you're unsure about the correct filter orientation.
  • If, after replacing the filter, you still experience significantly reduced airflow, persistent musty odors, or unusual noises from the HVAC system. This could indicate a more complex issue with the blower motor, evaporator, or ducting that requires professional diagnosis.
