Vehicle: 2024 Rivian R1T Adventure

Hey everyone,

I just got my brand new 2024 Rivian R1T Adventure a few months ago, and I'm already experiencing a really annoying issue. The infotainment screen keeps freezing up completely. It happens randomly – sometimes while I'm using navigation, other times when I'm just listening to music or adjusting settings.

When it freezes, the screen becomes totally unresponsive, and I can't control anything. The only way to fix it is to do a soft reset by holding down both steering wheel buttons. It's really frustrating for a vehicle that's practically new. Is this a known issue, or am I just unlucky?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Infotainment system freezes, while frustrating, are not uncommon in modern vehicles with complex electronics. Here’s a troubleshooting guide:

  1. Software Updates:

    • Ensure your Rivian's software is completely up to date. Rivian frequently releases over-the-air (OTA) updates that address bugs and improve system stability. Check your vehicle's settings for any pending updates and install them if available.
  2. System Reset (Beyond Soft Reset):

    • While you've performed a soft reset, there might be a more comprehensive system reboot procedure available. Consult your owner's manual or Rivian's support resources for instructions on a deeper system reset if the soft reset isn't consistently resolving the issue.
  3. Clear Cache/User Data (If Applicable):

    • Some infotainment systems allow for clearing cached data or resetting user profiles, which can sometimes resolve performance issues. Check your system settings for such options.
  4. Identify Triggers:

    • Pay attention to what you were doing right before the screen freezes. Is it always when using a specific app (e.g., navigation, Spotify), or after connecting a particular device? This information can be helpful for diagnosis.

When to See a Shop: If software updates and various resets don't resolve the persistent freezing, it's crucial to schedule a service appointment with Rivian. The issue could be indicative of:

  • A more deeply embedded software bug that requires a factory reflash or specialized diagnostic tools.
  • A hardware fault with the infotainment control module or the display unit itself.
  • Insufficient system memory or processing power causing the system to overload.

Since your vehicle is new, this would likely be covered under warranty. Be prepared to describe the frequency and specific circumstances of the freezes to the service technician.
