Vehicle: 2023 Rivian R1T

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2023 Rivian R1T and I'm starting to notice the airflow from the vents isn't as strong as it used to be, plus a bit of a musty smell sometimes. I'm thinking it might be time to replace the cabin air filter.

Has anyone here tackled this DIY on their R1T? I'm pretty handy but I haven't found a clear guide specifically for the Rivian. Is it a straightforward job, or are there any tricky panels or fasteners I should be aware of?

What tools did you need? And where exactly is the filter located? Any tips or tricks to make it easier would be greatly appreciated! Trying to save a trip to the service center if it's something I can handle myself.

Replacing the cabin air filter in your 2023 Rivian R1T is a manageable DIY task that can significantly improve your vehicle's interior air quality and HVAC efficiency. Here's a general guide:

  1. Gather Your Tools: You'll typically need a Phillips head screwdriver, a small flathead screwdriver (or trim removal tool), and your new cabin air filter (ensure it's the correct part for your R1T).
  2. Locate the Filter Housing: The cabin air filter in most Rivian R1T models is located behind the glove compartment on the passenger side.
  3. Access the Glove Box: Open the glove box. You may need to remove a dampener arm or release clips on the sides to allow it to swing down further or detach. Look for screws or clips holding the glove box in place.
  4. Remove the Housing Cover: Once the glove box is out of the way, you should see a rectangular plastic cover, often with clips or small screws, which houses the cabin air filter. Carefully unclip or unscrew this cover.
  5. Replace the Filter: Note the direction of the airflow arrow on the old filter before removing it. This is crucial for correct installation of the new filter. Pull out the old filter. Insert the new filter, ensuring the airflow arrow points in the same direction as the old one (usually towards the rear of the vehicle).
  6. Reassemble: Replace the filter housing cover, reattach the glove box, and secure any screws or clips you removed.

Why it's important: A clogged cabin air filter restricts airflow, making your HVAC system work harder, reducing its effectiveness, and potentially leading to unpleasant odors. It also filters out dust, pollen, and other airborne particles, contributing to a healthier cabin environment.

When to see a shop: While this is a straightforward DIY, if you encounter difficulty removing panels, cannot locate the filter, or are uncomfortable working with interior trim, it's best to consult a Rivian service center or a qualified technician. They can perform the replacement quickly and ensure all components are properly reassembled.

Maintenance Schedule: It's generally recommended to replace your cabin air filter every 1-2 years or every 12,000 to 20,000 miles, depending on your driving conditions and local air quality. If you frequently drive on dusty roads or live in an area with high pollen counts, more frequent replacement might be beneficial.
