2019 Ascent oil consumption - check PCV valve?

Vehicle: 2019 Subaru Ascent Touring

Hi all,

I've got a 2019 Subaru Ascent Touring with about 80,000 miles on the odometer. Lately, I've noticed that it seems to be consuming more oil than usual. I'm finding myself needing to add a quart or so between my regular 5,000-mile oil changes, which wasn't the case before.

There are no visible leaks that I can find, and no smoke from the exhaust. I've read on other forums that a clogged or faulty PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve can sometimes contribute to increased oil consumption. Is this a common issue on the Ascent, and is it something I can easily check or replace myself? Any other ideas for what might be causing the oil consumption?

Increased oil consumption on a 2019 Subaru Ascent at 80,000 miles, without visible leaks or smoke, definitely warrants investigation. A clogged or faulty PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve is a very plausible culprit and a good place to start your diagnosis.

Here's why and what to do:

  1. PCV Valve Function: The PCV valve is a one-way valve that vents crankcase gases (blow-by) into the intake manifold to be re-burned. This prevents pressure buildup in the crankcase and reduces emissions. If the valve gets stuck open, it can draw excessive oil vapor into the intake, leading to increased oil consumption. If it's stuck closed, pressure can build up, potentially forcing oil past seals or rings.
  2. Checking the PCV Valve:
    • Location: On the Ascent's FA24DIT engine, the PCV valve is typically located on one of the valve covers, often on the passenger side. It's usually a small, cylindrical valve with a hose connected to it.
    • Test: With the engine off, remove the PCV valve from its hose and shake it. You should hear a distinct rattle. If it doesn't rattle, it's likely clogged or stuck and needs replacement. You can also try to blow through it (it should only allow air in one direction).
  3. Replacement: Replacing the PCV valve is generally a straightforward DIY task. It usually just unscrews or pulls out from the valve cover. Ensure you use an OEM Subaru PCV valve for proper fit and function.
  4. Other Potential Causes of Oil Consumption (if PCV isn't the issue):
    • Turbocharger Seals: The Ascent is turbocharged. Worn turbocharger seals can allow oil to enter the intake or exhaust, leading to consumption without external leaks.
    • Piston Rings/Valve Seals: While less common on newer engines at this mileage, worn piston rings or valve stem seals can cause oil to burn in the combustion chambers. This might produce very light blue smoke, especially on startup or deceleration, which can be hard to notice.
    • Oil Viscosity: Ensure you're using the correct oil viscosity (0W-20 synthetic) as specified by Subaru. Incorrect oil can sometimes lead to higher consumption.

When to see a shop:

  • If replacing the PCV valve doesn't resolve the oil consumption issue.
  • If you notice any blue smoke from the exhaust, indicating oil is being burned.
  • If you're uncomfortable performing the PCV valve replacement or further diagnosis.
