2021 Ascent Headlight Condensation and Dimness

Vehicle: 2021 Subaru Ascent Touring

I've got a 2021 Subaru Ascent Touring, and I've noticed a persistent issue with condensation inside both headlight assemblies. It's not just a little fog; sometimes it looks like there are actual water droplets in there, especially after rain or a car wash. It eventually clears up, but it makes me worry about long-term damage to the bulbs or electronics.

On top of that, I feel like my headlights are not as bright as they should be. The visibility at night, especially on unlit roads, seems poor for a vehicle this new. I have the LED headlights. Is this condensation normal, and could it be affecting the light output? What should I do about this?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Condensation inside headlight assemblies, particularly if it's more than a light film or forms actual droplets, is a common concern and can be a sign of a sealing issue. While minor fogging can be normal due to temperature changes, persistent or excessive moisture is not.

  1. Inspect for Cracks or Gaps: Carefully examine the headlight assembly for any visible cracks, damage, or gaps in the seals around the lens or where the housing meets the fender. Even a small opening can allow moisture in.
  2. Check Bulb Access Covers: Ensure that all bulb access covers on the back of the headlight assembly are securely in place and properly sealed. If these are loose or missing, moisture can easily enter.
  3. Review TSBs: Subaru has issued TSBs related to headlight condensation for various models. Your dealership can check if there's a specific TSB or recall that addresses this issue for your 2021 Ascent Touring.

Common Causes:

  • Compromised Seals: The most common cause is a breach in the headlight assembly's seals, allowing water or humid air to enter. This can be due to manufacturing defects, age, or minor impact damage.
  • Ventilation Issues: Headlight assemblies are designed with vents to allow moisture to escape. If these vents become clogged, moisture can get trapped inside.
  • Temperature Fluctuations: While minor, temporary fogging is normal with significant temperature changes, persistent condensation indicates a deeper problem.
  • LED Module Degradation: While less common for dimness, persistent moisture can degrade LED components over time, leading to reduced output or failure.

When to See a Shop:

  • If you observe persistent or excessive condensation (e.g., water droplets, large areas of fogging that don't clear quickly), or if you suspect your headlights are genuinely dim, you should take your Ascent to a Subaru dealership. They can perform a leak test, inspect the seals, and determine if the assembly needs to be replaced under warranty. Ignoring significant moisture can lead to corrosion of internal components, premature bulb failure, and even electrical issues.
