Vehicle: 2023 Subaru Ascent Touring

Hi everyone,

I'm having an issue with my 2023 Subaru Ascent Touring. This morning, both the ABS warning light and the Traction Control (VDC) warning light came on simultaneously on my dashboard. There's no Check Engine Light, and the car seems to be driving normally, though I haven't tried to engage ABS or traction control since the lights came on.

I checked the brake fluid level, and it looks fine. I also made sure the gas cap was tight, just in case, but that usually triggers a different light. I haven't hit any major potholes or had any recent work done on the car. It has about 25,000 miles on it.

What could be causing both of these lights to come on at the same time? Is this typically a wheel speed sensor issue, or could it be something more serious like the ABS module? Any insights from other Ascent owners would be really helpful!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

When both the ABS and Traction Control (VDC) lights illuminate on your 2023 Subaru Ascent Touring, it typically indicates a fault within the vehicle's braking or stability control systems. These systems are interconnected, so a problem in one often affects the other.

Here are the most common causes and diagnostic considerations:

  1. Wheel Speed Sensors: This is by far the most frequent culprit. Each wheel has a sensor that monitors its rotational speed. If one sensor fails, becomes dirty, or its wiring is damaged, the ABS and VDC systems lose crucial data, causing both lights to illuminate.
    • Action: Visually inspect each wheel speed sensor and its wiring for any signs of damage, corrosion, or debris. A professional scan tool can read live wheel speed data to identify which sensor is faulty.
  2. ABS Module/Pump Failure: Less common, but possible, is a fault within the ABS control module or the hydraulic pump itself. This is a more expensive repair.
    • Action: A professional diagnostic scan will often reveal specific C-codes (Chassis codes) related to the ABS module if it's failing.
  3. Brake Light Switch: A faulty brake light switch can sometimes cause these lights to come on, as it provides input to the ABS/VDC system.
    • Action: Check if your brake lights are functioning correctly. If not, the switch might be the issue.
  4. Low Brake Fluid Level: While you mentioned checking it, ensure it's truly at the correct level. Some systems are very sensitive to even slightly low fluid.
    • Action: Top off if necessary, but also check for any leaks if the level was low.
  5. Steering Angle Sensor: The VDC system relies on the steering angle sensor to know the driver's intended direction. A fault here can trigger VDC and sometimes ABS lights.
    • Action: This would typically be accompanied by specific diagnostic codes that a professional scanner can read.

When to see a shop: While the car might seem to drive normally, the ABS and VDC systems are crucial safety features. If these lights are on, your ABS and traction control may not function in an emergency braking or slippery condition. It's highly recommended to take your 2023 Subaru Ascent to a Subaru dealership or a qualified independent mechanic as soon as possible. They have specialized diagnostic equipment to read the specific C-codes (chassis codes) related to the ABS/VDC system, which a generic OBD-II scanner often cannot access. This will accurately pinpoint the exact component that needs attention.
