Rough ride and excessive body roll on my 2021 Ascent Touring

Vehicle: 2021 Subaru Ascent Touring

Hello Ascent owners, I have a 2021 Subaru Ascent Touring with about 30,000 miles. Lately, the ride quality has really deteriorated. It feels much rougher over bumps, and there's a lot more body roll when I go around corners or even just change lanes. It almost feels 'floaty' at times, but also harsh.

I bought this car for its comfortable ride, and it's not living up to that anymore. Could my shocks or struts be going out already? Or is there something else I should be looking into with the suspension? Any thoughts are appreciated!

A rough ride, excessive body roll, and a 'floaty yet harsh' feeling on your 2021 Subaru Ascent are strong indicators of worn suspension components, even at 30,000 miles, depending on driving conditions. Here's what to consider:

  1. Initial Checks:

    • Tire Pressure: Start with the simplest check. Ensure all tires are inflated to the manufacturer's recommended pressure (found on a sticker inside the driver's door jamb). Incorrect pressure can drastically affect ride quality.
    • Visual Inspection: Look under the vehicle for any obvious signs of fluid leaks from the struts/shocks, or damaged/cracked coil springs.
  2. Common Causes:

    • Worn Struts/Shocks: These are the most likely culprits. Over time, the internal valving and fluid in struts/shocks degrade, leading to reduced dampening. This results in the 'floaty' feeling (poor body control) and a 'harsh' feeling (inability to absorb impacts smoothly).
    • Worn Coil Springs: While less common at 30k miles, springs can weaken or even crack, leading to sagging (especially in the rear) and a reduced ability to support the vehicle's weight, impacting ride height and quality.
    • Sway Bar Bushings/End Links: While primarily affecting body roll, severely worn sway bar components can also contribute to a less controlled ride over uneven surfaces.
    • Tire Condition: Beyond pressure, worn or improperly balanced tires can also contribute to a rougher ride and vibrations.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • If you notice any fluid leaking from your struts/shocks, or if the vehicle sags noticeably at any corner.
    • If the 'bounce test' (pushing down on each corner of the car and observing how many times it bounces) results in more than one or two bounces.
    • Any time you experience a significant degradation in ride quality or handling. Worn suspension components not only make the ride uncomfortable but also compromise vehicle stability, braking performance, and tire life. A professional can perform a comprehensive suspension inspection to pinpoint the exact cause and recommend appropriate replacements.
