Vehicle: 2021 Subaru Ascent Touring

My 2021 Subaru Ascent Touring, with about 35,000 miles, has developed some concerning issues. I've noticed significant uneven tire wear on the front tires, particularly on the inner edges. On top of that, the vehicle now consistently pulls to the right when I'm driving straight.

I had the tires rotated and balanced about 7,000 miles ago, and the problem seems to have gotten worse since then. I haven't hit any major curbs or had any accidents. The steering wheel also feels a bit off-center when I'm trying to go straight.

Could this be an alignment issue, or something more serious with the suspension? What should I be looking at for my Ascent?

Hello Emily R., uneven tire wear and a vehicle pulling to one side are classic symptoms of an alignment problem or worn suspension components. Given your 2021 Ascent Touring has 35,000 miles, it's definitely time for a thorough inspection.

Here are the primary causes and what steps to take:

Causes of Uneven Tire Wear and Pulling:

  1. Wheel Alignment Issues: This is the most common cause. Over time, impacts from potholes, speed bumps, or general wear can knock your vehicle's alignment out of specification. Incorrect toe, camber, or caster angles will cause uneven tire wear and lead to the vehicle pulling.
    • Toe: If the inner edge is wearing, it often indicates excessive 'toe-out' (front of the tires pointing away from each other).
    • Camber: Incorrect camber (the vertical tilt of the wheel) can also cause inner or outer edge wear.
  2. Worn Suspension Components: Components like ball joints, tie rod ends, control arm bushings, or strut mounts can wear out, introducing play into the suspension. This play prevents the wheels from holding their alignment correctly, leading to both uneven wear and pulling.
  3. Tire Issues: While less likely if the issue developed over time, a defective tire or an improperly inflated tire can cause pulling. However, the uneven wear points more towards alignment/suspension.
  4. Brake Drag: A sticking brake caliper on one side can cause the vehicle to pull in that direction, but this usually comes with other symptoms like excessive heat from the wheel or a burning smell.

What to Do:

  • Professional Alignment Check: The first step is to have a reputable shop perform a four-wheel alignment check. They will measure all the angles and determine if they are within Subaru's specifications.
  • Suspension Inspection: During the alignment check, the technician should also inspect all suspension components for wear, looseness, or damage. This includes ball joints, tie rods, control arm bushings, and strut assemblies.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediate Action: Uneven tire wear significantly shortens tire life, and a vehicle that pulls can be a safety hazard, especially in emergency maneuvers. Do not delay getting this inspected.
  • Comprehensive Diagnosis: A professional shop has the specialized equipment to accurately diagnose alignment issues and identify worn suspension parts. They can then perform the necessary adjustments or replacements to restore proper handling and prevent further tire damage.
