Vehicle: 2019 Subaru Crosstrek Limited

Hey everyone, I'm having some frustrating issues with the Starlink infotainment system in my 2019 Subaru Crosstrek Limited. It seems like at least once a week, the screen will completely freeze up while I'm driving. No touch response, no button response, nothing. The only way to fix it is to pull over, turn the car off, open the door, and restart it.

On top of that, my Bluetooth connection is constantly dropping calls or struggling to connect to my phone. It's really annoying, especially when I'm trying to use navigation or make hands-free calls. I've tried unpairing and re-pairing my phone multiple times, but the problem persists.

Is this a known bug with the 2019 Crosstrek's Starlink system? Has anyone found a reliable fix or a software update that addresses these problems? I'm getting tired of having to reboot my car's head unit all the time.

The issues you're experiencing with your 2019 Subaru Crosstrek's Starlink infotainment system, including freezing screens and unreliable Bluetooth connectivity, are unfortunately quite common complaints for certain Subaru models equipped with the generation of head units from that period. These problems are often software-related but can sometimes stem from hardware.

Here's what you should investigate:

  1. Software Updates: The most frequent solution for these types of issues is a software update for the infotainment system. Subaru has released multiple updates to address stability, Bluetooth connectivity, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto performance.
    • How to Check: You can often check for updates via the Starlink system itself (if it's not frozen) or by visiting a Subaru dealership. They have access to the latest firmware versions and the tools to install them.
  2. Troubleshooting Steps (You can try these first):
    • Soft Reset: While your car-off/door-open method works, sometimes a longer press on the volume/power knob (usually 10-15 seconds) can force a soft reset of the head unit without turning off the car.
    • Factory Reset: You might find an option in the Starlink settings to perform a factory reset of the infotainment system. Be aware this will erase saved settings, paired phones, etc.
    • Phone Specifics: Ensure your phone's operating system is up to date. Sometimes, phone updates can cause temporary compatibility issues. Try testing with a different phone if possible to rule out your device as the sole cause.
  3. Potential Causes:
    • Buggy Firmware: The most common cause is simply a bug or instability in the infotainment system's operating software.
    • Hardware Malfunction: Less common, but a faulty head unit component (e.g., a failing processor or memory chip) could cause freezing.
    • Interference: While rare, electrical interference could potentially affect Bluetooth stability.

When to See a Shop: If software updates and basic troubleshooting don't resolve the freezing and Bluetooth issues, you should schedule an appointment with your Subaru dealership.

  • They can perform a full diagnostic scan of the infotainment system.
  • They will have the necessary tools to install the latest firmware updates.
  • If software updates fail, they can diagnose potential hardware faults and recommend a head unit replacement under warranty if applicable. It's important to address this, as a malfunctioning infotainment system can be a safety distraction.
