Vehicle: 2022 Subaru Crosstrek Premium

Hi all, I'm having some frustrating issues with the infotainment system in my 2022 Subaru Crosstrek Premium. Specifically, Apple CarPlay (and my wife's Android Auto) keeps disconnecting intermittently. Sometimes it works fine for a whole trip, other times it drops out every few minutes.

I've tried different cables, restarted my phone, and even done a soft reset on the infotainment system (holding down the power button). The problem persists. It's really annoying when I'm using navigation or listening to music.

Is this a known issue with the 2022 Crosstrek? Could it be a software bug, or something more serious with the USB port or head unit itself? Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer: Intermittent Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity issues are a common complaint across many vehicle brands, including your 2022 Subaru Crosstrek Premium. While often frustrating, there are several electrical and software-related factors that could be at play.

Here's a troubleshooting guide:

  1. Inspect USB Port and Cable:
    • Cable Quality: Ensure you're using high-quality, MFi-certified (for Apple) or OEM-equivalent USB cables. Cheap or worn-out cables are a primary cause of intermittent connections.
    • Port Cleanliness: Check the vehicle's USB port for any debris, lint, or bent pins. A small amount of compressed air can help clean it.
    • Phone Port: Also check your phone's charging port for similar issues.
  2. Software Updates:
    • Phone OS: Ensure your smartphone's operating system (iOS or Android) is fully updated.
    • Subaru Infotainment: Check if there are any available software updates for your Crosstrek's infotainment system. Sometimes dealerships can perform these, or they might be available via Wi-Fi.
  3. Reset Infotainment System: You've tried a soft reset, but sometimes a more thorough reset (if available in settings) can clear glitches. Consult your owner's manual for specific instructions.
  4. Test with Different Phones: If possible, try connecting a different phone (both Apple and Android) to see if the problem persists. This helps isolate whether the issue is with your specific phone or the car's system.
  5. Disable Battery Optimization (Android Auto): For Android users, ensure battery optimization is turned off for the Android Auto app in your phone's settings, as it can sometimes interfere with background processes.

When to See a Shop:

  • If you've tried all the above steps with no success.
  • If the USB port itself feels loose or physically damaged.
  • If other electrical functions of the infotainment system (e.g., radio, Bluetooth) are also acting erratically.
  • A dealership can diagnose potential hardware faults with the head unit or USB module, check for internal wiring issues, and perform any necessary firmware updates that aren't user-accessible. While there aren't specific OBD codes for infotainment, communication issues might sometimes log U-codes (e.g., U0164 - Lost Communication with HVAC Control Module, if integrated, or more general communication bus errors).
