Vehicle: 2022 Subaru Crosstrek Limited

Hello everyone,

I've got a weird issue with my 2022 Subaru Crosstrek Limited. The driver's side LED headlight has started flickering intermittently. It's not completely out, but it will flicker on and off, or sometimes just dim significantly for a few seconds before returning to normal brightness.

It seems to happen randomly, sometimes when I hit a bump, sometimes just driving on a smooth road. The passenger side headlight is perfectly fine. I haven't had any accidents or done any modifications to the lighting system.

Is this a common problem with the LED headlights on newer Crosstreks? Could it be a loose connection, or something more serious like a failing LED driver module? Any advice on what to check or if this is a warranty issue?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Flickering LED headlights on a newer vehicle like your 2022 Subaru Crosstrek Limited can be concerning, as LED systems are generally quite reliable. This issue typically points to a problem within the electrical circuit supplying power to the LED, rather than the LED itself failing completely.

Common Causes:

  1. Loose Connection: The most frequent culprit is a loose or corroded electrical connector at the headlight assembly or within the wiring harness leading to it. Vibrations from driving can cause intermittent contact.
  2. Faulty LED Driver Module: LED headlights often use a separate 'driver' module (ballast) to regulate power. If this module is failing, it can cause flickering or inconsistent light output.
  3. Wiring Damage: Less common, but damaged or frayed wiring within the headlight circuit can lead to intermittent power delivery.
  4. Grounding Issue: A poor ground connection for the headlight assembly can also cause erratic behavior.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Visual Inspection: Carefully inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the driver's side headlight assembly. Look for any signs of corrosion, looseness, or damage. Gently wiggle the connectors while the light is on (if safe to do so) to see if it affects the flickering.
  2. Check for Moisture: Ensure there's no moisture inside the headlight housing, which could cause electrical shorts.
  3. Battery and Alternator Check: While less likely for a single headlight, ensure your car's battery and charging system are in good health, as low voltage can sometimes manifest as electrical anomalies.

When to See a Shop:

Given that your Crosstrek is a 2022 model, it is almost certainly still under the factory warranty. This type of issue, especially with a factory LED system, should be covered. It's highly recommended to take your vehicle to a Subaru dealership as soon as possible. They have the specialized diagnostic tools to pinpoint whether it's a wiring issue, a faulty LED driver module, or the entire headlight assembly that needs replacement. Attempting to diagnose or repair complex LED systems yourself can be difficult and may inadvertently void your warranty.
