Vehicle: 2022 Subaru Crosstrek Limited

Hey everyone, I'm experiencing some really annoying electrical problems with my 2022 Subaru Crosstrek Limited. The infotainment system frequently freezes or reboots itself while I'm driving. Sometimes the screen just goes black entirely. On top of that, the backup camera often doesn't activate when I put the car in reverse, or it shows a distorted, flickering image.

It's intermittent, which makes it hard to diagnose. I've tried disconnecting the battery for a bit, but the issues return after a day or two. Could this be a software bug, a wiring issue, or a failing module? Any ideas what could be causing this?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Intermittent infotainment and backup camera issues on a newer vehicle like your 2022 Crosstrek can be quite frustrating and often point to a few common electrical or software-related causes.

Causes:

  • Software Bugs: The infotainment system's software may have glitches that cause freezing or reboots. Updates are often released to address these.
  • Loose Wiring Connections: Connections to the head unit, display, or backup camera could be loose or corroded, leading to intermittent functionality.
  • Faulty Head Unit Module: The infotainment unit itself might be failing internally.
  • Backup Camera Unit Failure: The camera itself, or its wiring, could be intermittently failing.
  • CAN Bus Communication Issues: Problems with the vehicle's internal communication network can affect various electronic modules.

Diagnostic Steps:

  1. Check for Software Updates: Subaru frequently releases software updates for their infotainment systems. Contact your dealership or check Subaru's owner portal to see if an update is available for your specific head unit.
  2. Perform a Hard Reset: Disconnect both battery terminals for 15-30 minutes, then reconnect them. This can sometimes clear module memory and resolve temporary electronic glitches.
  3. Check Fuses: Locate the fuse boxes (typically under the dash and in the engine bay) and inspect fuses related to the infotainment system, display, and backup camera. A blown or loose fuse could cause intermittent issues.
  4. Inspect Visible Wiring: While difficult without professional tools, sometimes visible wiring behind the head unit or near the camera in the tailgate can become loose or damaged. This is usually best left to a professional.

Common OBD Codes:

  • Direct infotainment/camera faults often don't trigger generic OBD-II codes. However, a shop's advanced scanner might pull U-codes (e.g., U0164 - Lost Communication With HVAC Control Module, if it's a CAN bus issue) or B-codes (Body Control Module related) that indicate module communication problems.

When to See a Shop: If software updates don't resolve the issue, or if the problem persists after checking fuses and performing a hard reset, it's best to visit a Subaru dealership or a reputable automotive electrical specialist. Intermittent electrical issues, especially involving multiple systems, often require specialized diagnostic tools to check module communication, pinpoint wiring faults, and potentially replace faulty components. Given the car's age, it may still be under warranty.
