2022 Crosstrek Won't Start - Just Cranks, No Fire

Vehicle: 2022 Subaru Crosstrek 2.0i Limited

My 2022 Subaru Crosstrek 2.0i Limited suddenly won't start this morning. It cranks strongly and sounds like it's trying, but the engine just won't catch and fire up. There was no Check Engine Light on before this happened, and none is currently illuminated.

I've tried jumping it, but that didn't help. The battery seems fine as it cranks vigorously. What could be preventing it from starting? Is this a common issue for newer Subarus?

A 'crank, no start' condition on your 2022 Subaru Crosstrek means the engine is turning over but isn't igniting the fuel-air mixture. For an engine to start, it needs three main things: fuel, spark, and compression. Since it's cranking strongly, we can generally rule out a completely dead battery or starter motor, though a weak battery can sometimes cause issues even with strong cranking.

Common Causes for Crank, No Start:

  • Lack of Fuel:
    • Fuel Pump Failure: The pump isn't delivering fuel to the engine. You might not hear the typical 'whirring' sound when you turn the key to the 'on' position.
    • Clogged Fuel Filter: While less common on newer vehicles for a sudden no-start, it can happen.
    • Fuel Pressure Regulator Issue: Not maintaining correct fuel pressure.
  • Lack of Spark:
    • Crankshaft Position Sensor: If this sensor fails, the ECU doesn't know when to fire the spark plugs or inject fuel.
    • Camshaft Position Sensor: Similar to the crank sensor, can prevent proper timing for spark and fuel.
    • Ignition System Failure: Less likely to be a sudden, complete failure across all cylinders.
  • Immobilizer System: If the key isn't recognized, the immobilizer can prevent the engine from starting, even if it cranks. Look for a security light on the dashboard.
  • Engine Control Unit (ECU) Failure: Rare, but possible.

Diagnostic Steps:

  1. Listen for Fuel Pump: Turn the ignition to the 'ON' position (don't crank) and listen carefully for a faint whirring sound from the rear of the vehicle for a few seconds. This indicates the fuel pump is priming.
  2. Check for Spark: This requires a spark tester, but you can carefully remove a spark plug, reconnect it to its coil, ground the plug against a metal part of the engine, and have someone crank the engine briefly to see if it sparks. (Exercise extreme caution).
  3. Check for Fuel at the Rail: This is more involved and usually requires a fuel pressure gauge. However, you can sometimes depress the Schrader valve on the fuel rail (if present) to see if fuel squirts out (again, with caution, protecting eyes and skin).
  4. Look for Security Light: Check your dashboard for any flashing security lights or messages that indicate an immobilizer issue.
  5. Scan for Codes: Even without a CEL, there might be pending or historical codes stored in the ECU, especially for sensors like the crankshaft or camshaft position sensor.

When to See a Shop:

If you've confirmed the fuel pump isn't priming, or if you suspect a sensor failure, it's best to have your Crosstrek towed to a Subaru dealership or a qualified independent mechanic. Diagnosing a no-start condition often requires specialized tools to test fuel pressure, spark, and sensor signals accurately. They can quickly pinpoint the exact cause and get your vehicle running again.
