Vehicle: 2017 Subaru Crosstrek 2.0i Premium

Hello everyone,

I've got a 2017 Subaru Crosstrek 2.0i with about 80,000 miles. Lately, I've noticed it's been consuming a bit more oil than usual between changes. I usually do my oil changes every 6,000 miles with synthetic 0W-20, but I find myself adding about a quart every 3,000-4,000 miles now. There are no visible leaks under the car.

Could this be related to the PCV valve? I've heard that a clogged PCV valve can contribute to oil consumption in some engines. Is this something I can check or replace myself on a Crosstrek? What are the signs of a failing PCV valve?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Your observation of increased oil consumption on your 2017 Subaru Crosstrek 2.0i, especially without visible leaks, makes the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve a very plausible culprit. A faulty PCV valve is a common cause of oil consumption and other engine issues.

1. Role of the PCV Valve:

  • The PCV system vents crankcase gases (blow-by) back into the intake manifold to be re-burned. This prevents pressure buildup in the crankcase and reduces emissions.
  • The PCV valve regulates this flow. If it's stuck open, too much oil vapor can be drawn into the intake, leading to consumption. If it's stuck closed, pressure builds up, potentially forcing oil past seals or rings.

2. Symptoms of a Failing PCV Valve:

  • Increased Oil Consumption: As you've noticed.
  • Rough Idle: Can occur if the valve is stuck open, creating a vacuum leak.
  • Engine Sludge: If stuck closed, moisture and contaminants can build up.
  • Oil Leaks: Increased crankcase pressure can force oil past gaskets and seals.
  • Check Engine Light: Less common for just a PCV valve, but can trigger codes related to lean conditions or misfires if it causes a significant vacuum leak.

3. DIY Check and Replacement:

  • Location: On the 2.0L FB engine in your Crosstrek, the PCV valve is typically located on the top of the engine, often near the intake manifold or valve cover. It's usually a small, cylindrical valve with a hose connected to it.
  • Checking: With the engine off, remove the PCV valve from its hose and shake it. You should hear a distinct rattle. If it doesn't rattle, it's likely stuck and needs replacement. You can also try blowing through it (it should allow air in one direction but not the other).
  • Replacement: It's generally a straightforward DIY task. Unscrew the old valve (it's often threaded in) and screw in the new one. Ensure the hose is securely reconnected. Use only an OEM or high-quality aftermarket PCV valve designed for your specific engine.

4. When to See a Shop:

  • If replacing the PCV valve doesn't resolve the oil consumption issue. This could indicate other problems like worn piston rings, valve stem seals, or other internal engine wear.
  • If you're uncomfortable with the procedure or cannot locate the valve.
  • A shop can perform a compression test or leak-down test to assess the internal health of your engine if oil consumption persists.
