ABS and VDC Lights On - 2020 Forester Sport

Vehicle: 2020 Subaru Forester Sport

My 2020 Subaru Forester Sport, with about 45,000 miles, just had its ABS and VDC (Vehicle Dynamics Control) warning lights illuminate on the dashboard. They both came on simultaneously while I was driving normally on the highway.

I haven't noticed any immediate changes in braking performance or handling, but it's definitely concerning. I tried turning the car off and on again, but the lights remain on. I don't have an OBD-II scanner handy right now.

Is this a common issue for Foresters? What should I be looking for, or what's the typical cause when both these lights come on together?

Hi Mike T., it's quite common for the ABS and VDC lights to illuminate together on Subaru vehicles when there's an issue with the braking or stability control system. These systems are interconnected, so a fault in one often triggers a warning for the other.

Here are the most probable causes and what you should do:

  1. Wheel Speed Sensor Failure: This is the most frequent cause. Each wheel has a sensor that monitors its rotational speed. If one sensor fails or becomes dirty/damaged, the ABS and VDC systems lose crucial data, triggering the warning lights. Common OBD-II codes associated with this are C0031, C0032, C0033, or C0034, indicating a fault in a specific wheel speed sensor circuit.
  2. Faulty ABS Module: Less common, but a malfunctioning ABS control module can also cause these lights to appear. This is a more expensive repair.
  3. Low Brake Fluid: While usually triggering a separate brake warning light, extremely low fluid can sometimes affect ABS/VDC operation.
  4. Steering Angle Sensor Issue: The VDC system relies on the steering angle sensor. A fault here can also trigger both lights.

What to Do:

  • Scan for Codes: Your first step should be to get an OBD-II scanner and check for diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). Most auto parts stores offer free code reading services. The codes will pinpoint the exact area of the fault.
  • Visual Inspection: Once you have the codes, you can visually inspect the relevant wheel speed sensor and its wiring for any obvious damage or debris.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediate Concern: While braking might feel normal, the ABS and VDC systems are disabled when these lights are on. This means you won't have anti-lock braking or stability control in an emergency, which is a significant safety concern. Drive cautiously.
  • Professional Diagnosis: If the codes point to a wheel speed sensor, a shop can confirm the diagnosis and replace it. If the codes indicate a more complex issue like an ABS module or steering angle sensor, professional diagnosis and repair are essential. Do not delay getting this checked.
