Vehicle: 2021 Subaru Forester Sport

Hi all,

I've noticed a new clunking or rattling noise coming from the front end of my 2021 Subaru Forester Sport. It's most noticeable when I go over small bumps or uneven pavement at low speeds, like in a parking lot or driving down a rough residential street.

It sounds like something is loose. The car only has about 35,000 miles on it, so I'm a bit surprised to hear suspension noises already. Has anyone else with a newer Forester experienced this? What should I be looking for?

Thanks for any advice!

A clunking or rattling noise from the front suspension of your 2021 Subaru Forester, especially over bumps at low speeds, is a common complaint that can stem from several sources. While 35,000 miles might seem early, certain components can wear out depending on driving conditions.

Here are the most common causes for such a noise:

  1. Sway Bar End Links: These are a very common source of clunking noises. The ball joints on the end links can wear out, causing play and noise when the suspension articulates.
    • Inspection: Visually inspect the end links for torn boots or excessive play when the wheel is off the ground and the suspension is loaded/unloaded.
  2. Control Arm Bushings: The rubber bushings in the lower control arms can degrade over time, leading to metal-on-metal contact or excessive movement.
    • Inspection: Look for cracks or tears in the rubber bushings. A pry bar can be used to check for play (carefully, by a professional).
  3. Strut Mounts/Bearings: The top strut mounts or the bearings within them can wear out, causing a clunk, especially when turning or going over bumps.
    • Inspection: Check for excessive play at the top of the strut tower or listen for noise when turning the steering wheel while stationary.
  4. Ball Joints: The lower ball joints connect the control arm to the steering knuckle. Wear here can cause significant clunking.
    • Inspection: With the vehicle safely jacked up, try to move the wheel vertically and horizontally to check for play.
  5. Loose Components: Sometimes, it can be as simple as a loose bolt on a suspension component or even a loose heat shield.
    • Inspection: A thorough visual inspection and wiggle test of all accessible components.

When to See a Shop:

Any unusual suspension noise should be investigated promptly. While some issues might seem minor, worn suspension components can affect your vehicle's handling, tire wear, and ultimately, safety. It's best to have a qualified technician perform a comprehensive suspension inspection. They have the tools and expertise to safely lift the vehicle, load the suspension, and accurately pinpoint the source of the noise, ensuring your Forester remains safe and comfortable to drive.
