Vehicle: 2021 Subaru Forester Sport

My 2021 Subaru Forester Sport suddenly lit up with a bunch of warning lights today – Check Engine, ABS, Traction Control, and the EyeSight system disabled message. The car seems to drive fine, but it's concerning.

I haven't hit anything or had any recent work done. Could this be a sensor issue or something more serious with the computer? I'm worried about driving without the safety features.

It's definitely alarming when multiple warning lights illuminate, especially those tied to the EyeSight system. Subaru's EyeSight is highly integrated with various other vehicle systems, so a fault in one area can trigger warnings across several others.

  1. Check the Gas Cap: Believe it or not, a loose or faulty gas cap can sometimes trigger a Check Engine Light (CEL), which in turn can disable EyeSight and other systems like Traction Control and ABS. Ensure it's tightened until it clicks several times.
  2. Inspect Battery Voltage: A weak or failing 12V battery can cause erratic electrical signals, leading to false warning lights. Have your battery and charging system tested. Low voltage can confuse vehicle modules.
  3. Clean EyeSight Cameras: Ensure the windshield area in front of the EyeSight cameras (located at the top center of the windshield) is clean and free of dirt, ice, or obstructions. While usually a specific 'EyeSight blocked' message appears, general system faults can sometimes be related.
  4. Look for OBD Codes: The Check Engine Light indicates a stored diagnostic trouble code (DTC). You can get this scanned at most auto parts stores for free. Common codes that could trigger these lights include:
    • P0420: Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (often triggered by a faulty O2 sensor or catalytic converter, but can cascade to EyeSight).
    • C1201: Engine Control System Malfunction (a generic code often set when the ECM detects an issue, leading to EyeSight disablement).
    • U0100: Lost Communication with Engine Control Module (ECM) / Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
    • C0051: Steering Angle Sensor Malfunction (less common but can affect stability systems).

When to See a Shop: If tightening the gas cap and checking your battery doesn't resolve the issue, or if you retrieve any specific OBD codes, it's crucial to have your 2021 Forester professionally diagnosed. A Subaru dealership or a reputable independent shop with Subaru diagnostic tools can accurately pinpoint the root cause, which could range from a faulty wheel speed sensor, brake light switch, or a more complex module issue, ensuring your safety systems are fully functional.
